Danish design studio Space Copenhagen is launching three new collections for GUBI in the autumn. The collections are comprised of The Howard lighting collection which is inspired by the studio’s light design for the Howard Hotel in New York, the Unbound lighting collection, a pared-back take on a traditional Japanese paper lantern with a distinctive sculptural character, and Private, an assortment of storage and display furniture pieces with clean lines and symmetry.

Howard

The Howard collection of lighting is a celebration of New York’s material palette, as seen through Scandinavian eyes. Space Copenhagen reached out to longtime collaborator, GUBI, to develop the concept and create the collection, which now includes chandeliers, pendants and a wall lamp. Dominated by dark metals and industrial aesthetics, the character of the metropolis has become globally iconic, and the Howard Collection is Space Copenhagen’s tribute to it. “The Howard Collection is inspired by our fascination with the industrial beauty of the city of New York. We have paired this with our passion for everyday functionality as well as sculptural silhouettes and organic materials that age gracefully over time,” says Signe Bindslev Henriksen of Space Copenhagen.

Unbound

The Unbound collection fulfils the studio's ambition to create a practical but poetic lantern with a distinctive sculptural character that does not impose on the space around it. Instead, the lamps define and celebrate the scale of the room, populating dark corners and gathering the boundaries together. “It is liberating to take the sculptural element seriously and understand that light is not just for solving practical needs, but also for creating the sense of peace and harmony required for a perfectly balanced space,” explains Peter Bundgaard Rützou, Space Copenhagen.

Private

The Private collection is a dedicated exercise in clean lines, symmetry and tonal restraint but undeniably generous in its expression. The visual simplicity and careful balance of dimensions and materials enable each piece to feature in any room of the home and to fit seamlessly into a range of different interior styles – from an open modern loft apartment to an intimate and traditional home, as well as hospitality and retail environments. The collection comprises a glass-panelled upright vitrine, a sideboard with four deep drawers, an elegantly pared-down desk suitable for homeworking, and a side table with space for both display and personal storage.
