Canon is an immersive art exhibition by artist Tom Mùller that can be witnessed at the Cathedral Square in the city of Perth, Australia. Inspired by the rich heritage of the city, Mùller has created Canon, an experience that allows viewers to observe the city of Perth for a few minutes at a time while lounging on the grass, engulfed by a light smoke. Immersed in cascading clouds, the audience is confronted with a musical sound that starts off softly and then builds the crescendo, ending with a sublime choir that is equal parts energising and cathartic.

The Cathedral has commissioned Australian artist Tom Mùller to create a sensorial experience that allows viewers to observe the clouds while everything else gets engulfed in smoke. Designed to infuse a sense of calm into the environment, the combination of smoke and soft music transport the audience into a meditative space. Mùller says that he wants people to “Take a break from the everyday and slip into four minutes of calm and reflection" by experiencing Canon which will be on display from the 18th of February until the 13th of March, 2022.

The Cathedral Square is a listed heritage site. It has a 140 year old history in the city of Perth. Once known as the ‘State Buildings’ having housed the Treasury, Post Office, Land Titles building and more, the Cathedral Square has now been returned to its people. In 1925, the southeast corner of the Cathedral Square was used as point-zero for all mapping of the city, making it a centrifugal force of the area. Now the square has been converted into a cultural hub for residents and visitors, where one can experience food, art and community, giving the heart of the city a soul.

Tom Mùller was born in Basel, Switzerland and has since based his practice out of Fremantle, Australia. With a multidisciplinary approach to his work, he pays special attention to detail and always finds beauty and poetry in the smallest of things. At the same time, Mùller sees the big picture; keeping ideas of globalisation, history, culture, space and landscapes in mind. With Canon, Mùller draws from the heritage of Perth and creates a surreal atmosphere with an enchanted aura. Mùller’s work has also been showcased in major exhibitions around the world, including 'The National' at Carriageworks, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Adelaide Biennial, Biennale de la Chaux-de-Fonds, and Northern Alps Triennale in Japan.
