Italian furniture brand Turri, in an attempt to keep up with the continually evolving market, the demands of which are guided by the latest trends and fads as well as on the availability of resources, has recently heralded a stylistic change in their latest launches, all of which will soon be displayed at Salone del Mobile 2022. Through their latest reference “Made in Italy”, Turri reiterates the location of its origin, while also promising to focus on celebrating Italian history. While the larger theme alludes to Italy as “home”, the collections, comprising items for the dining, living and bedroom spaces, make up products that can be situated in a home setting. Amongst the several collections that are part of this series is the Domus collection by Italian designer and architect Matteo Nunziati.

Nunziati’s Domus takes cues from Gio Ponti’s investigation of “contemporary” during the 1930s. It comprises features of the traditional Roman house, but with an aesthetic that simultaneously references the future. The solidity and sense of order that characterise the historic domus are also reflected in the clean lines that outline Nunziati’s furniture pieces. By combining Gio Ponti’s investigative reflections, his own knowledge of Italian design and architecture and the essence and features of Roman architecture, Nunziati has created a collection that reminds viewers of traditional Italy, while also tending to extant needs, demands and aesthetics.

The proportionate implementation of details, material selection and expert workmanship and craftsmanship that is also visually evident in the pieces crafted by Nunziati help communicate the artisanal journey of Italian furniture design. By referencing factors and aesthetics from the past, the designer suffuses these pieces with warmth and familiarity. The three sub-collections within Domus, namely the ‘dining collection’, ‘living collection’ and ‘bedroom collection’ follow a common stylistic thread. Although created to cater to different activities and spaces, their shapes, materials and finishes, on account of their resemblance to each other, clearly appear like members of the same family.

The ‘dining collection’ comprises a large rectangular dining table, dining chairs, and both the high sideboard and the low sideboard, which can be customised in several different ways with marble top inserts and plain or semi-mirrored doors. A combination of wood, marble and matte light-platinum metal, the table makes for an elegant and timeless furniture item. The single wooden table-top smoothed and placed directly on top of the sleek metallic legs is a unique highlight that perfectly complements the wood chairs that are a combination of an elegant form and a decorative cut placed at the junction of the seat and the backrest. Both the pieces utilise the basic element used in the collection, eucalyptus wood.

Domus ‘living collection’ comprises coffee tables and fully-upholstered sofas that come in three different variances, namely the two seater, three seater and four seater versions. All the sofas are either covered entirely in fabric or leather, or in a combination of both these contrasting materials. The coffee table, on the other hand, takes this juxtaposition of heavy contrasts a notch higher by placing white and dark, wood and marble and warm and cool colours and surfaces next to each other. Created in a square or rectangular profile, the table tops are crafted either in wood or marble entirely, or are made out of largely wooden surfaces with marble inserts. This combination of the cool marble with the warmer eucalyptus wood embodies the beauty of different materials and textures embracing each other in order to create a balanced and refined union of two noble elements where the beauty of each comes out alive against the other.

The final and most comprehensive series, namely the ‘bedroom collection’, made up of a dressing table, a bed and bedside tables, all of which are sculpted out of eucalyptus wood, have simple and elegant silhouettes. In this series, the variation is seen in terms of functionality instead of in the usage of materials. The various versions of the bedside tables include open shelves, closed storage compartments or a chest of drawers, each of which can be chosen depending on need and desire. The defining product of this sub-collection, however, is the dressing table. It is sculpted out of eucalyptus wood, like all the other pieces in the collection. With placeholders designed to accommodate the regularly used products, the entire frame is supported on metal legs.
