Brentwood
When American Grammy-winning record producer, songwriter, and musician John Hill was thinking about buying a new house in Brentwood, California, he reached out to Leah Ring, Principal of Another Human, an interior and product design studio. Hill had worked with Another Human in the past for his recording studio in Venice where he has recorded albums for musicians such as Christina Aguilera, Eminem, Florence + the Machine, Jay-Z, Kesha, Khalid, Kimbra, Kings of Leon, M.I.A., Nas, P!nk, Rihanna, Shakira, and Wu-Tang Clan. From that experience, he knew they worked well together and trusted her design sensibilities. He had her look at the 3,300 square-foot mid-century house in Brentwood before he purchased it.
Another Human noted strong architectural elements which could be enhanced through colour choices, lighting, and furnishings to give an overall feeling of an elevated yet warm and comfortable home. As soon as Hill purchased it, Another Human got to work providing a quick timeline for the family of four to move into the house. Hill’s last home had a completely different feel, allowing Another Human to start from scratch in terms of furnishing. Each room seamlessly combines vintage and new pieces from local California designers to honour the era the house was built.
When it came time for the children’s rooms, Another Human consulted the kids so that their tastes could be reflected. In addition, another Human brought in Gia Canali to source art for the walls. The living room drenched in natural light is at the heart of the home. Another Human designed the space as a place for entertaining, where they envisioned the family could listen to music. The first item sourced was a multicoloured rug from Etsy. Next, Another Human found vintage pieces such as safari chairs, lamps, tables, and a loveseat from Amsterdam Modern. Finally, Another Human paired the vintage pieces with an olive green sofa from Nickey Kehoe. Overall the room is colourful but not overwhelming. Upon leaving the living room, one ends up in a bright white, panelled hallway. Opening a nearly hidden panel gives access to a powder room covered in a teal and mustard House of Hackney wallpaper that contrasts the lightness of the hallway.
Another Human heightens the midcentury feel of the room with vintage sconces and a reproduction of a Gio Ponti mirror. For the primary bedroom, Another Human wanted the space to have an airy feel that balances feminine with masculine. Another Human designed a custom bed with built-in nightstands built by Arbor Exchange. The light buttery yellow walls complement the warm tones and textures in the bedding - a quilt by Commune, sheets by Hawkins and pillows by Nickey Kehoe. Another Human added vintage reproduction Lumfardo sconces and a vintage Italian Cocoon pendant for lighting. The room is tied together with a rug by Dash and Albert. The bathroom off the primary bedroom contains a Stan Bitters ceramic installation outside of the window. Another Human painted the vanity lavender to give the space a modern twist.
The house contains three spaces dedicated to the children, their bedrooms, and a media room. The goal of the bedrooms was to design spaces that could grow with the children. The daughter originally wanted flower wallpaper, but she ended up with a flower motif rug from Anthropology to provide more flexibility in the future. A bunk bed by Room and Board allows the daughter to have sleepovers, while a desk by Poppin and a chair by Pottery Barn Teen provide a space for her to work. For the son’s room, Another Human wanted to bring in colour to make the room fun while keeping it masculine. Another Human painted the closet doors in different muted colours, blue, red, yellow, and green which pull from the colours of the Pendleton blanket. The room also contains a desk by Bludot and an Eames reproduction chair. The children’s media room leads out to the backyard and pool. A key element of the room is Another Human designed modular couch in five colours of fabric that were Teflon™ treated, allowing the kids to come in after a swim. The colourful couch breaks into five pieces, two ottomans and three back pieces that can be rearranged based on the kids' needs. The sofa sits on a striped jute rug by Dash and Albert and is surrounded by tiny tables by Matthew Philip Williams. A Hay Bon Bon pendant provides lighting, and the son’s artwork is featured on the walls.
Most of the home consists of one level, except the tv room and office, which are one level up. While natural light and brightness define the other spaces within the house, the TV room is dark and moody to reflect a space best for viewing. Another Human designed a gigantic L-shaped sofa, 13 feet x 11 ft, that is big enough for the whole family to enjoy while watching something together or to relax. Vintage denim pillows were added to the couch to lighten the space. A large seven-foot coffee table inspired by Charlotte Perriand designed by Another Human, and fabricated by Arbor Exchange sits in front of the sofa. The home office, accessible through the TV room, was designed so that both Hill and his wife could work in the space simultaneously. Abor Exchange fabricated the custom desk. The Moroccan rug was purchased from Etsy and paired with vintage chairs and desk lamps. When the office isn’t being used for work, it can double as a guest room by pulling out the bed in the DWR sleeper sofa. Another Human allowed the mid-century architecture of the home to lead in the design process. They took cues from the overall aesthetic and existing elements, such as a banquette eating area in the kitchen that they re-upholstered in S. Harris and St. Frank fabrics, to create a home that feels true to the era but is contemporary and comfortable for a family with children.
