Angelino Heights
When a Canadian TV writer and the actress moved to Los Angeles, they bought a 1913 Craftsman-style home in the Angelino Heights neighbourhood to live in with their daughter. Situated within a historically protected residential zone, they knew they would need to be thoughtful and intentional with how they renovated the home. For the task, they turned to Another Human, led by Leah Ring, who helped lighten the home overall with renovations such as adding new windows and custom furnishing while preserving the home’s style that initially drew the clients to it.
To open the kitchen and provide a casual dining space, Another Human relocated the laundry room to the second story and removed a wall, extending the kitchen and making space for a breakfast nook. As part of the kitchen renovation, a new green linoleum floor was added, and new windows and doors matched the home’s original historic details. Even with the renovation, the kitchen is narrow, and to accommodate the breakfast table, Another Human had one custom-made by Arbor Exchange.
For seating, Another Human added a green custom-made banquette with storage drawers underneath and a striped cushion upholstered in Pindler fabric. Another Human upgraded Ikea cabinets with new pulls sourced on Etsy and floating shelves in a deep green. Another Human enhanced the original details found within the dining room, adding an Adelphi wallpaper using a print from 1827 between the dark brown exposed ceiling beams and matching dark wood moulding. Another Human paired a vintage table from Elsie Green with vintage dining chairs. A lighting fixture by Australian designer Ben Tovim adds a contemporary flair. Burgundy custom curtains complement the blue tone in the wallpaper.
Next door, in the living room, Another Human created a custom sofa and armchairs that are complemented by a Josh Greene table and a vintage art deco rug. A pendant lamp from Rejuvenation hangs above. The living room's walls are a light buttery yellow to balance the dark wood and the olive green custom-made curtains. In the back of the home and accessible from the living room and kitchen is the sunroom washed in warm colours. Another Human designed an L-shaped sectional for the family to watch movies together. The sofa is paired with a vintage rug and coffee table from CB2. Another Human created a section of the room as a play area for the couple’s daughter, furnished with a bookshelf found on Etsy and a vintage French mattress for sitting on the floor.
The second floor houses the bedrooms and library. The previous owner painted the primary bedroom dark grey with dark brown trim. Another Human lightened the palette by painting the walls a dusty blue with a creamy colour for the trim. To continue the feeling of lightness, Another Human added floral print curtains and shades by Kelly Ventura to the windows throughout. There is a small office nook with a desk, a vintage chair, a 1930s Austrian table lamp with a soft pink shade, and a seating area to look out to the yard with a vintage Italian Venini light fixture, and a sleeping area. The bed has a chartreuse green custom headboard with vintage nightstands with vintage table lamps on each side. A vintage bench reupholstered in green leather lives at the foot of the bed.
The children’s room was designed with the owners’ oldest daughter in mind, who loves pink and purple. Another Human paired Cowtan & Tout wallpaper with a floral design with a Liberty London print roman shade. The room is tied together with a bunk bed with traditional wood details, a vintage rug and dresser and Stray Dog design light fixtures. In addition to the bedroom, the children have a library where they can do their schoolwork. For the library, Another Human custom designed the desk and storage which sits opposite a custom daybed, and had a custom Pojagi curtain made for the window. Each design decision was made to ensure the house could have always existed this way. From vintage to custom pieces, window treatments to paint colours, they all have a sense of timelessness.
