Urban to industrial design: 10 modern dining tables to elevate your home interiors

From sculptural to graphic avant-garde pieces, STIR enlists modern dining table designs that champion craft with a focus on materiality.

The dining room is the most important element of any residential layout, the concept of which was first introduced by the Greeks and Romans who created a space for dining, and as more people found a spot at the table, the dining area was envisioned as the heart of the home. The dining room renders as a space where interior design can be reimagined in unique ways centred around the dining table as the main character. Highlighting intriguing material choices, and inspiring themes — from industrial design to postmodern, urban design to contemporary realism, we present our shortlist of 10 modern dining table designs for a well-appointed home.

1. Fragménté Dining Table by Frédéric Saulou

A culmination of mineral matter and stone craftsmanship, the Fragménté dining table is a series of fragments made from black slate assembled together to support the grey smoked mirror top. Designer Frédéric Saulou has manifested his sensitive approach to forms and materials through this design, which aims to strive towards a fair, mastered, simple, and striking design while throwing light on the usage of raw materials. The design pays homage to traditional materials by reinventing them for new functions.

2. Leonardo dining table by Visionnaire

The Leonardo dining table designed by Alessandro La Spada is one of the pieces by Visionnaire from their Mythica collection . The distinctive feature of this furniture is that the layers that make up its base, are MDF surface layered in the mould and worked in 3D with vertical ribbing, the curvature of the metal element at the base compliments the oval top of the table made from hurricane marble which adds a sculptural appeal to the piece.

3. In Between by LEMA

In Between is a sculptural table designed by Ximi Li for Lema takes a front seat within its surroundings owing to its unique base design. An alteration of individual elements crossed by space gives two-dimensionality to the living area through the base of In Between. The whole figure achieves its lightweight appearance based on the manner in which the round top touches its base.

4. Michael Young x Manks Green 4A dining table

The Green 4A dining table is a collaborative effort between industrial designer Michael Young and Hong Kong -based furniture and lighting brand Manks as part of the Michael Young Home collection. This collection is a conscious effort to reduce the carbon footprint left by the creative industry through a series of furniture, lighting, and accessories aimed at subverting existing supply chain systems by sourcing vernacular raw materials, one of which is the Green 4A dining table, a contemporary design utilising the latest technological innovations.

5. Sculptural dining table by Casey McCafferty

Casey McCafferty's latest project, Transcendence, uses materials to tell imagined stories, with organic contours moving on an innate path. The larger-than-life gestures manifested by McCafferty's use of a common object vernacular allow us to find the mythological in the every day, transcending the ordinary through an inquisitive emotion of wonder.

6. Homey by Poltrona Frau

Designed by GamFratesi the Homey dining table aims to shine the spotlight on home and emphasise on its contribution to domestic settings that are increasingly inclined towards sharing. This compact designer table is characterised by soft but volumetric lines with an emphasis on fine and expertly crafted materials. Reminiscent of haute couture the two-leg flaps made from the die-cast aluminium fold and join together without touching giving rise to a chiaroscuro effect in the center. This versatile dining table is available in four rectangular and square sizes, with wood or marble tops.

7. Nebil Zaman’s Dining table

Nebil Zaman’s dining table can be classified as a distinctive breed of furniture design with its bold sculptural design. This plastered furniture piece strikes an evocative chord of archaeological edifices and engravings, assembled out of laser-cut, plaster-cast MDF boards featuring a unique corrugated texture that recollects roughly stacked monumental structures from the past and ultra-modern visions of the future. The plaster's dense texture decides the final outcome of the piece; a combination of two techniques, one structured and controlled and the other organic and arbitrary, makes this piece unique and distinctive.

8. Venexia Table by Luca Nichetto

Ethimo and Luca Nichetto have expanded the Venexia collection with a dining set, a lounge collection inspired by 19th century urban design, with the addition of the aesthetic and functional aspects of furnishings for contemporary use crafted in comfortable shapes featuring a refined harmonious system of fine aluminium slats reminiscent of old fashioned railings. The aluminium base of this dining table along with its stone top gives the table a fine blend of different materials. The instantly perceived continuity of the base enhances the lightweight design, increasing the tactile sensations of the top.

9. Oro Dining Table by Chris Wolston

The Oro dining table is a manifestation of Chris Wolston’s playfully fabricated work, blending traditional techniques and materials with contemporary realism and giving rise to a postmodern aesthetic for the dining table. The piece was showcased at the Future Perfect Gallery to showcase the contemporary design dining table enabling a shifting perspective towards sculpting functional furniture pieces thoughtfully conceptualised and whimsically fabricated.

10. Trocadero by Armani/Casa

Trocadero, the most iconic Armani/Casa table, is distinguished by the design of its four legs, which are placed closely together to create the illusion of only two monolithic elements beneath the tabletop. The table, available in four variants includes tops in painted linen, black drafted stucco, mud-drafted stucco and white gold drafted stucco. The legs are available in black maple and satin black nickel.

Channeling the wide spectrum of materials envisioned by their furniture designers, each of the furniture piece evokes a distinct modern appeal, allowing them to be incorporated into myriad interior design settings.
