Sweden based industrial designer Luca Nichetto, known for designing contemporary objects and spaces that educe a subtle old-world charm, recently unveiled a range of varied designs and products under his eponymous studio. The Italian designer merges different worlds in his creations: Murano traditions with extant trends, regional styles with modern technological offerings, and minimalistic features with expert Italian craftsmanship. Some of the latest offerings by Nichetto Studio include the visual theme for Copenhagen based design event 3daysofdesign, the ‘871 days, 50 products, 17 designers and 1 single colour’ exhibition for La Manufacture, Bloom sofa system, and LCDC candles for Ginori1735, amongst others.

STIR offers a peek into a few of these designs by the industrial designer:

Luca Nichetto, Wittman's Art Director and curator of the brand's showcase during Milan Design Week 2022 , has also designed three new pieces for the brand. Titled Turky side table, Paradise Bird Full Back and Andes Swivel, the three furniture items are quirky pieces that can successfully add a zing to any space. All three of them are aesthetically pleasing, can be showcased as standalone ornamental objects and can also serve functional purposes accredited to them. Washed in several colours, they are fit to be seated in myriad kinds of environments. Their shapes make them flexible for usage as a seating or storage item.

The LCDC candles care perhaps one of the most unique types of candles designed. With their shape evoking classical Renaissance, sculptures they fill any room with a sweet fragrance and a strong visual presence. The LCDC family, created for Ginori1735 also comprises home fragrances shaped in similar silhouettes.

Flirt & Tea for Salvatori

Evoking the classy designs regularly produced by Salvatori, Nichetto designed a chess set and a lamp for the luxury brand. Created as a table with a reversible and detachable top opening up with a chess board, Flirt is a uniquely named and uniquely designed set that makes for an interesting play and storage object. While one face of the table is designed for chess players, the other side features a plain surface suitable for holding items of interest. Teo, the lamp made out of a rolled sheet of paper and a strong stone base is another unique and classy object designed by Nichetto, suitable for softly lighting up the area around it.

Jeometrica for Scavolini

Jeometrica is a multi-purpose system that offers solutions for bathrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. Designed as a response to the need of creating a home environment that can tend to physiological as well as leisure demands, these systems attempt to turn indoor spaces into art. The collection consists of various items such as chairs, tables, stools, and lamps and was born out of the refreshed appreciation that one has for their homes due to extended periods of time spent indoors during the pandemic.

Biggie for Twils

Developed from a skeletal form, Biggie sofas are two and three seater seats that can be modulated to create smaller or larger pieces of furniture. The individual pieces can either be used as independent armchairs or as cosy long couches. “I wanted a chameleonic project, from all points of view. Modular, with a size that ideally grows indefinitely. And at the same time I also wanted a simple, traditional, two or three-seater sofa. Unquestionably comfortable, soft. Suitable for contract spaces as well as for the living room. And to all the places we live in today, where functions overlap spontaneously. I wanted a product that could be understood in every part of the world,” says Nichetto.

The Bloom modular sofas, designed for outdoor spaces, are simple, versatile and transformable. With a 3D knitted fabric covering the metal structure, the sofas appear cosy and welcoming. The aluminium legs of the seating makes these sofas appear like they are floating mid-air. “Our idea was to work on a metal structure that had the opportunity to have mesh backs, which would give both support and aesthetics to the objects. These two features are often thought as addends of a sum, where they’re actually strictly connected to each other. Sometime - like in this project - not only connected but depending. One can’t live without the other, and at the end they both live,” says designer Luca Nichetto.

Visual theme for 3daysofdesign

For the 2022 edition of 3daysofdesign, Nichetto designed a character trio inspired by the defining icons and elements of Denmark. Referencing a famous design, a typical Danish dish and an architectural landmark in Copenhagen respectively, his animated characters are lively and cheerful, beckoning thus an energetic response from the participants and attendees of the festival. Imprinted upon a bright orange background, the trio appears to be standing like showy mannequins that evoke images from Denmark, while not revealing too much about the three-day design event that hosts a variety of furniture, lighting and homeware products through exhibitions, workshops, and pop-up events.

Apart from building up the anticipation for the event that took place from 15 June to 17 June 2022, Nichetto's caricatures are examples of his unique range as a designer. Just like 3daysofdesign offers a glimpse into the city's clever personality, these animated figures grant a peek into the events and programmes that were held at the festival.

La Manufacture: 871 days, 50 products, 17 designers and 1 single colour

A temporary exhibition to showcase the brand's artistic journey was conceived by Luca Nichetto, the Art Director of Italian fashion and design brand La Manufacture. ‘871 days, 50 products, 17 designers and 1 single colour’ was envisioned as a temporary exhibition to showcase the brand’s artistic journey. “La Manufacture is a work in progress, it’s a young and dynamic company which has already left a strong mark in the industry,” says Nichetto. “I telegraphed that notion within the rich and multilayered space via the single, bright orange nuance which adorns all the design objects to further emphasise them and put them in dialogue with the surrounding space,” he adds.

The exhibit was displayed at the Poldi Pezzoli museum in Milan from 6th to 12th June 2022. Apart from carrying the brand’s label and thus representing the company’s values, the items displayed at the showcase were denominated by another key factor: the colour of the objects on display. Washed in an orange that neither stands out too prominently nor disappears in the background, each object, different in form, function and style, sits harmoniously with each other. The orange colour is drawn from the vests worn by men at work. The recurrence of the conspicuous hue helps set the tone of the showcase that is otherwise dotted with rich classical overlays and inlays.

BeMyGuest by Luca Nichetto and Vitale Barberis Canonico

Iterating his experimental side, Nichetto partnered with Italian fabric brand Vitale Barberis Canonico to create a lively showcase dotted with eccentrically dressed lamp mannequins. Touted BeMyGuest, the exhibit was showcased during Fuorisalone 2022 in the Vitale Barberis Canonico showroom in Milan. Each piece showcased the brand's meticulous attention to detail and brilliantly lit up the space with its luminescence and striking personality. Sitting at the intersection of design and fashion, the lamps, shaped out of resin and Murano glass and dressed in costumes by Anthony Knight, appeared like animated anthropomorphic figures.

Vallonnè and Vallonné Opale suspension lamps for Barovier&Toso

Nichetto, who grew up in Murano and witnessed the workings of the glassmaking industry from an early age, recently collaborated with Venetian glass brand Barovier&Toso to create two unique glass collections. The pieces utilise the ancient techniques of glassmaking to produce the Vallonnè and Vallonné Opale suspension lamps. Both of these serve as graceful homages to the archaic technique of making glass. In keeping with the times, Nichetto created silhouettes that are modern and can fit well in contemporary spaces, keeping thus the relevance of this collection intact.

Wolfgang Lounge for Fornasarig

With the addition of the metal Wolfgang Lounge to the Wolfgang family of chairs, Nichetto has further expanded the Italian brand's list of offerings. The chair, designed by Nichetto for Fornasarig, comes in two versions: one with a high backrest and the other with a low backrest. It carries a strong resemblance to the original Wolfgang collection: both the chairs encapsulate the seater with their distinctive shell-like arms and back and thus, make for a comfortable lounging spot.
