Matter Made, the New York-based contemporary lighting manufacturer presents the Legato lighting system, a collaborative collection created with Venice-based product designer Luca Nichetto. From single-strand pendants to chandeliers, the new lighting design system can be applied to a range of indoor settings, from residential to retail and hospitality interiors, adapting to the distinct frequency of each space. Legato is available in textured graphite in both horizontal and linear configurations.

The name Legato is inspired by the Italian musical term, indicating a smooth, uninterrupted flow of notes. Similarly, the lamp design features cone-shaped modules mounted on a rigid aluminium structure, with each module being 'tied together' yet allowing for versatile configurations. The product design's double directionality creates an interplay of reflections and shadows between the cones, accentuating their volumes. The lighting system's modular design offers extensive possibilities, enabling the creation of dynamic installations or architectural walls of bi-directional light.

"Think of a musical score where every note connects smoothly, creating a continuous melody. The Legato lighting system is like this, with cones organised like notes to make different compositions," mentions the Italian designer in the project's official description.

"We originally debuted the design concept during Milan Design Week in 2018. While we initially sought to scale production of Luca's collection, in time we realised that would come with some sacrifices we weren't willing to make," shares Jamie Gray, founder of Matter Made. "In fact, the intricate nature of the design presented an exciting opportunity to keep our production in-house. This strategic shift allowed us to ensure the life-long quality and craftsmanship that Matter Made is known for. We are thrilled that we are now able to offer this collection to our clientele," he continues.
