In conjunction with Milan Design Week 2025, German design studio BUDDE releases a new collectible design in collaboration with Cologne-based Nando Studio at Galleria Rossana Orlandi. DUNE is a handcrafted rug design that transforms into a chaise lounge—merging traditional floor seating with European-style comfort. “The pattern mimics the flowing dunes of a desert landscape, with a warm, shifting color palette that reflects the subtle changes in sunlight along the sand dunes,” designer Johannes Budde outlines in an official statement.
With roots in architecture, BUDDE’s work encompasses typologies such as furniture design, lighting design and home decor. Driven by a courageous spirit, the studio seeks to introduce meaningful objects that provide a new take on the mundane. Nando Studio, on the other hand, creates rugs, product designs and interior concepts through the harmonious interplay of colour, nuances and shapes. The works radiate the so-called ‘joie de vivre’ and are influenced by both international and national inspirations. Ferdinando Colosimo, founder of the studio, finds balance in his work by spending time with people who are close to his heart, which deeply enriches his unique process of creating extraordinary pieces of art and design.
The design object DUNE unconventionally redefines the function of a traditional rug, blending cultural heritage with modern adaptability at the design event. Drawing inspiration from the significance of rugs in nomadic desert cultures, DUNE merges the tradition of floor seating with European-style comfort. Designed by BUDDE and gun-tufted by Nando Studio, the rug evolves into a sculptural chaise lounge, supported by a bent aluminium structure. The aluminum structure can be flexibly removed and attached underneath the left or right side of the rug to integrate smoothly into different environments.
The piece is a unique testament to the art of tufting, combining the traditional technique with contemporary interior aesthetics and requirements for comfort. As a functional artwork, it invites users to explore rug seating on the soft surface with the option to lie down on the comfortable lounge daybed. With its unconventional form and versatility, it becomes both a centrepiece and a conversation starter.
DUNE is exclusively represented by Rossana Orlandi gallery and will be on display during the design week from April 7 – 13, 2025, in Milan, Italy. Custom pieces can be tailored to individual preferences while maintaining the essence of the nomadic desert-inspired roots.
