During the Milan Design Week 2021, which opens on September 5, 2021, Beijing based MAD Architects led by Ma Yansong presented three new works-the art installation "Freedom" and the reinterpretation of Dior's classic oval back chair "Meteor (Meteor) )” and the “Gu Table (Bone Table)” cooperating with Italian furniture brand Sawaya & Moroni.

Meteor

Invited by Dior Maison, Ma Yansong reinterpreted Dior's classic work-the Medallion Chair. The work was named "Meteor (Meteor)". Its smooth and smart design is full of futuristic sense as if opening a journey through time and space. The works are made of monochromatic 3D printed polyurethane material, which blends natural charm and three-dimensional structure evokes emotional resonance and shows Ma Yansong's artistic and architectural creative ideas. The design cleverly grasps the size and form, dialogues with nature, and creates works that transcend time.

Freedom

Invited by the Italian magazine Interni, the public space installation "Freedom" created by MAD Architects will be exhibited in Milan Design Week 2021. This is the second time that MAD exhibited its new work in the Cortile d’Onore courtyard of the University of Milan, following the work "Infinity" in 2016. Facing the post-epidemic era, "Freedom" symbolizes our common desire to restart a new life. The artist Ma Yansong explained the implication of this work: "If we are seeking freedom or establishing contact with others, we should transcend physical or intangible spaces and transcend limitations." The installation under the courtyard arch presents a seabird preparing to fly into the air and fly into the distance. It is reminiscent of humanity's expectation of starting anew in the current uncertain epidemic era.

Seabirds, as a symbol of freedom, borderlessness, and tolerance, also appeared in the Fenix Immigration Museum designed by MAD. The project is located in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and is expected to be completed in 2025. The device is composed of metal profiles made by Eurostands and covered with LED strips provided by Ledvance to make it glow at night.

Gu Table (Bone Table)

Following the "Gu Chair" in 2018, MAD continues to collaborate with Italian furniture design brand Sawaya & Moroni this year to launch the latest work "Gu Table". "Gu Table" is a continuation of "Gu Chair". The design of the work refers to human bones, and the streamlined and flexible curve seems to be continuously extending. The combination of the two works is like a beautiful human body curve and natural landscape. Its wooden material and form also make it look like a sculpture. The seamless joining of all parts shapes it into a growing organism.
