Italian luxury brand Bisazza, known inordinately for their decorative glass mosaics, is extending their scope of creative offerings with the introduction of a new material: marble. Comprising ten different designs, the Marmosaico marble mosaic tiles collection are designed by Carlo Dal Bianco, an architect and designer based in Vicenza, Italy, and Studio KO, a French design studio founded and fronted by Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty. “Marble is our chosen material featured in almost all our projects. Its rich heritage and, at the same time, contemporary elegance make it a source of unlimited creativity and innovation,” share Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty, founders of Studio KO. The collection will be showcased at the upcoming Milan Design Week in June 2022.

The designs, evocative of the classical arches, mediaeval labyrinths and traditional cobblestone path patterns, are quintessential floor and wall coverings, much like the glass mosaics originally created by the brand. Apart from expanding Bisazza’s portfolio of mosaics, this collection, created in collaboration with Italian and French designers, is also an ode to 20th century Milanese architecture. "In developing a collection with Bisazza, we were deeply inspired by Italy itself, where each region offers an extraordinary variety of marble with its many colours and styles. As architects and connoisseurs of understated elegance, we pay tribute to this treasured mineral through a reworking of modern domestic concepts that transforms the traditional aesthetic customs, uses, and often, functions of marble," explains Studio KO in an official statement.

The patterns designed by Bianco are abstract recreations of defining architectural features and elements from the traditional Milanese bourgeois home interiors. Each pattern comes in two colour combinations. Made using marble tesserae that are carefully hand-cut using traditional artistic techniques by the Bisazza Atelier artisans, every tile piece is a combination of several marble bits such as Bianco Thassos, Giallo Verona, Crema Botticino, Absolute Black, Kaiser Brown, Guatemala Green, Verona Red and Bardiglio Grey.

On the other hand, Studio KO’s marble designs draw inspiration from a range of classic Italian features and structures such as Pompei, the floor patterns of St.Mark’s Basilica and the architectural works of Gio Ponti and Piero Portaluppi. The result is three abstract geometric compositions that are interplays of light and shadows. Touted Modulo 1, Modulo 2 and Modulo 3, each tile comes in three colour combinations: Chiaroscuro, Monocromo, and Policromo. Modulo 1, Modulo 2 and Modulo 3 utilise rectangles, triangles and circles respectively to create algorithmic patterns that are reminiscent of intricate textile weave patterns.

While the Chiaroscuro colour sequence is made up of the contrasting hues of Nero Marquinia, Bardiglio Nuvolato and Arabescato Bianco marbles, the Monocromo colourway is made up of a trio of white marbles, namely Arabescato Bianco, Calacatta Oro and Thassos. Policromo, on the other hand, is a version that conjuncts ocher, grey and black by composing Giallo Verona, Bardiglio Nuvolato and Nero Marquinia. Finished in matte, the nine resultant designs are perfect adornments for laidback interior settings.
