Denmark-based Kristina Dam Studio's monochrome collections are characterised by architectural semantics. Founded in 2012 by graphic designer Kristina Dam, the studio operates with an intent of making industrial design, furniture design and artistic textiles and sculptures accessible to everyone. 2023 encountered the expansion of Dam’s approach, one she refers to as ‘Sculptural Minimalism’—through new product designs, sculptures and interior design projects.
As the new year silently but steadily lurks in, STIR looks back at people, pieces, places, events and more from the best of 2023 by Kristina Dam Studio.
1. People:
For her presentation at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen, Kristina Dam Studio collaborated with sculptor Katrine Blinkenberg from FirePaperRun to offer visitors the chance to create their own cast sculpture at a unique sculpture workshop.
At Milan Design Week 2023, Dam presented at the Terra exhibition curated by Studiopepe.
2. Pieces:
The 2023 collection by Kristina Dam Studio encompasses clean lines and contemporary designs that embody craftsmanship and material. The objects explored the relationships between positive and negative spaces, art and functionality.
The new sculpture collection by Dam, comprising Contour Sculpture L and Contour Sculpture S, is handcrafted using light grey sandstone as a set of limited edition pieces.
The Curved series featured sculptural designs, paying tribute to simplicity and crafted using powder coated or stainless steel. The Curved wall shelf and Curved pedestal are compositions of sleek lines that can function as side tables, a bench or shelving.
The Serif glass vases are sculpted with subtle curves inspired by the serif known from typography. The vases employ mouth-blown opal white glass and function as a sculpture or for displaying flowers.
The Relief artworks, consisting of VOL. 1 and VOL. 2, create a unit and function as a single or paired artwork. The embroideries on canvas in powder-coated frames add a layer of tactility to contemporary spaces.
The Silhouette Illustrations was introduced in 2023 as limited-edition illustrations printed on grey cardboard. The abstract artworks speak of interactions between positive and negative spaces.
The Mesh candle holder references the product designer’s Grid series and draws inspiration from brutalism—honouring pure materials, geometrical and unusual shapes.
Dam crafted the Dowel bottle display in stainless steel, enveloped in clean lines that can enhance bathroom spaces with its minimalism.
The Axis side table is a culmination of an experiment on space between permeability and concealment. The furniture designers mesh geometric shapes that form a solid side table evocative of the classic bar trolley.
3. Places:
Gl. Kongevej 109, an interior design project in Copenhagen, is a canvas of soothing colours and designs in natural materials. Darling Creative Studio, the creator of the updated interior, selected Dam’s creations throughout the space for a coherent and minimalist expression.
Events to Remember:
At Milan Design Week 2023, Kristina Dam Studio partook in the Terra exhibition curated by Studiopepe with numerous sculptures and signature designs that reference the earth through shapes and materials.
At 3daysofdesign event this year, Kristina Dam Studio held its annual exhibition at the central location of The Vintage Bar. The exhibit staged the designer's new designs and the original sculptures by Dam in a set of multi-sensory experiences.
