What happens when design coincides with art at a level of sculptural purity? What happens when we readily accept raw and heavy-duty materials as the drapes for furniture pieces; while correlating them as creative pursuits of fine luxury? The result is the vision of a young Belgian artist- Jumandie Seys who works at the point of convergence for art and design. The Atelier Ecru Gallery is all set to launch the selected works of Jumandie Seys at the Ghent-based design festival - Collectible.

Seys resides and works in Ghent where he dons several hats - of an artist, a designer and a skilled artisan. He aims at producing furniture that explicitly displays the real and raw nature of materials with a conception that lies in the micro-architectural structures holding a dialogue of pure structure and design. He works to create alluding imagery of emotions with textures and tactility while addressing the contrasting topics of computer skills with artisan skills, perfection with imperfection and simplicity with complexity.

For the Collectible design fest, Jumandie will be showcasing his Arch and Shift collections consisting of side tables, work desks and minutely designed columns. For the Arch collection, Seys commemorates the process of deconstruction in modern design philosophies. He takes up regular architectural elements and deconstructs them to suit the purposes of every individual piece. The result is a collection of simple, curved symmetric structures with an added edge of sturdiness through finishes. All the products in the collection are available with finishes like roughly polished aluminium or weathered leather showcasing a certain level of complexity.

Seys manipulates the materials in a way that gives these products a sense of tactile and visual tension. To create the raw and explicit materials, he undertakes research focused on the recreation and abstraction of materials that wear and tear over time. He looks into the stages of weathering which occurs when he scraps and influences the natural outlook of these materials. His weathered leather is one of his beloved material finishes which he creates by naturally manipulating leather with pores and natural blemishes.

For his ‘Shift’ collection, Jumandie displays a collection of articulated columns. These columns are minimal but functional with an added context of shifting solid forms. He believes that with a simple shift in structure, a new perspective geometry gets created. These columns are produced in a patinated steel finish that adds a pinch of artistic value to the fragments. Stephanie Frederickx and Christophe Urbain’s Atelier Ecru Gallery in Belgium is known for its display of contemporary, brutalist and modern designs from across the world. The gallery is all set to present the works of famous designers like Tim Vranken, Jojo Corvaia, Katrien Doms, Cedric Breisacher, Maria Scarpulla and many more at the Collectible Design Festival’s 2022 edition.
