A unique exhibition will be presented by Atelier Ecru Gallery from 13 to 29 May in a former ballet school located in the heart of the historic city centre of Antwerp. Located between Oude Beurs and Kaasrui, the 600m2 penthouse boasts soft cinematic light and beautiful rough edges and is set within a classically styled bourgeois townhouse. Founded by Stéphanie Frederickx and Christophe Urbain, the gallery is renowned for its display of contemporary, brutalist and modern design, art and furniture. Their upcoming exhibition dubbed ‘Moving Traces 07’ will be open to visitors from the 13 to 29 May 2022.

The ballet school is temporarily home to Atelier Ecru Gallery and with this exhibition, the gallery intends to promote its identity and values - who they are and what they stand for. It is a major presentation outside the walls of their own gallery space in Ghent.

Visitors can view this exhibition as an entrance to the gallery’s world where design is approached as art, and designers as artists. The designers are the focus of all attention at the Atelier Ecru Gallery. Their work is underpinned as an oeuvre, giving it the time and attention it needs to be at its best.

The gallery experiments with styles, embraces diversity and detests the banal. In their approach, emotion, love and respect are key elements. This all results in an exhibition presenting well-known, established names next to lesser-known and up-and-coming names. Visitors will find pieces by Maison Armand Jonckers, Pierre De Valck, Domingos Tótora, Adeline Halot, Lucas Morton, Frédéric Saulou, Laurids Gallée among others.

All these designers have a unique disposition for creating art and functional design in the gray zone, eliminating superfluous elements and focusing on the essence, the pure form. Their works often reflect nature or natural elements, fusing experimentation with craft. A potpourri of artists that span across different generations, the gallery presents a roster of designer-artists in an unusual, dramatic setting. The gallery is producing a collection of objects that demonstrate a sense of stillness and serenity. This feeling is further strengthened by the use of raw and inherent beauty of natural materials.
