Salone del Mobile.Milano is back with its 60th edition. Deferred earlier this year owing to the coronavirus pandemic, the celebrated design fair is scheduled to take place from 7 June 2022 to 12 June 2022 at Fiera Milano Rho in Italy. The furniture fair will continue to echo its magnificent presence in Milan while also bringing renewed focus to the themes of sustainability, ecological transition and the future of living as well as the idea of restarting and adapting into an ever-transitioning world, made more apparent by the change in lifestyle witnessed over the past two years. The 2022 edition of the fair will feature a retinue of 2,100 exhibitors encompassing an area of 200,000 square metres. With a large chunk of international brands and designers amongst them, the fair truly holds the promise to be inclusive and diverse.

Maria Porro, president of Salone del Mobile.Milano, while addressing both the challenging circumstances of the past two years as well as the war in Ukraine, expressed her sentiments: “Salone serves as a spot where cultures meet, it serves as a bridge between cultures and populations and we believe that if we can really focus on the works of so many people, it becomes even more important.”

The seven different exhibitions happening simultaneously at the fair will not only feature different kinds and styles of furniture and furnishings, but will also allow for segregated positioning of these themed showcases during the event. While the main Salone del Mobile.Milano exhibition will host more than 2,000 national and international exhibitors, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition is set to host more than 1,000 exhibitors over an area of 139,000 square metres. The EuroCucina exhibition, Technology For the Kitchen exhibition, International Bathroom Exhibition and S.Project will host a cumulative of almost 400 exhibitors between them, while the SaloneSatellite space will welcome 600 designers, most of which are fresh graduates and upcoming designers, over an area of 13,000 square metres.

The 60th edition of the fair also marks the comeback of the annual event following a hiatus in 2020 and an adapted edition, touted Supersalone in 2021. The fair, valued and celebrated for its quality, innovation and beauty, also aims to become the harbinger of conversations around sustainability and environmental awareness, as well as herald large-scale events that can now happen physically after the hiatus that etched the past two years.

SaloneSatellite, the 23rd edition of which will grace the fairgrounds, will serve as a major starter for several up and coming designers. As discussed by Cristina Celestino and Sebastian Herkner at the Salone Press Conference on 16th March 2022, the event will catapult more than 500 designers into limelight at one of the most well-known design events in the world. With a defined focus on designing for a better and sustainable future, the pavilions of the event will host sensorially charged installations and elicit powerful reactions.

“I am not from Milan, I moved here. When I moved to Milan, the impact of the city was very strong. I cultivated this passion for design, but personally experiencing the Salone fair feels like the life of the city,” said Cristina Celestino at the Salone conference.

Another interesting installation that will feature at the fair is the La Scatola Magica, which is an homage from the Salone del Mobile to Milan. The installation, designed as a monumental camera obscura that is six metres high and 24 metres deep, will usher the audience into a space that initially appears like an art gallery, until the atmosphere darkens and the magic box plummets viewers to witness eleven films by eleven Italian filmmakers.

While events and installations like Design With Nature, SaloneSatellite and La Scatola Magica hallmark the fair with invigorating showcases and designs by several young and upcoming designers, aimed at heralding environmental consciousness and encouraging conversations, events like EuroCucina 2022 and FTK-Technology For the Kitchen 2022 will serve the purpose of auguring the themes of sustainability in the appliances and materials industry.

EuroCucina 2022 will mark the 23rd edition of the event. Having established a name and space as a significant kitchen trade show, the upcoming edition will host 82 exhibitors who will showcase their offerings and highlight the functional, typological and technological innovations in the kitchen space, bringing to focus both national and international brands. Apart from serving as an important space dedicated to witnessing and learning the latest trends, this edition of the kitchen trade show will place special focus on portraying this crucial domestic space as a multifunctional and flexible one, with the boundaries separating it from other domestic spaces getting blurred. This contemporary aspect, which has gained further enunciation during the two years plagued by the pandemic, will be essentially highlighted through a range of fluid designs that delve into the possibility of posing kitchens as the centre of the house, as a social space where needs of both physiological and social spectra can me met effectively. However, the focus of the event will not cease at bringing focus to creating the kitchen as a versatile space that can accommodate multifarious activities like congregations and relaxation or working and snacking. It will also show the way to extend these supposedly private spaces into the semi-private zones like the living areas and also, perhaps, a semi-shaded space like a balcony or garden.

Some of the accessories that will make their presence felt at the EuroCucina event are wine cellars, domestic greenhouses, laundry columns, versatile bookcases that function as makeshift barriers, and a flurry of foldaway and walk-in kitchens with concealed faucets and fixtures making an appearance only when the need arrives. A major focus of the event will definitely be a range of materials used to bring different projects to life. Focusing especially on material experimentation and the many offerings of latest technology, the event will present innovative materials that are non-abrasive, are characterised by improved surface hardness and resistance to chemicals, can bear extended exposure to UV rays and thermal shock, while staying intact and in place. By focusing on innovative products that are created as a result of shorter production cycles, the event will especially highlight the importance of sustainable techniques and methodologies to create essential contemporary facilities and spaces.

Another event that will pose as a harbinger of sustainable products in the market is FTK – Technology For the Kitchen 2022, which will showcase a large paraphernalia of responsible, inclusive and technologically advanced products that also satisfy the categorisation of sustainable offerings. The 8th edition of the event will serve as a counterpart to the EuroCucina trade event and will showcase a flurry of innovative concepts, prototypes and products. Spread over an area of 11,000 square metres, where a total of 39 exhibitors will display their offerings, the FTK event will showcase what is touted as the future of cooking and conserving. With a long list of resilient, human-friendly, intuitive and accessible products, it will serve not only as a display event meant for observing and critiquing, but also as a space that can inspire creatives to design easy products and spaces and pose as a viable option for buyers.

Emphasising the fair’s focus on sustainability, FTK will host domestic appliances that can utilise technological offerings coupled with software advances to simplify domestic chores as well as optimise the usage of electrically powered appliances. The importance of inclusivity to achieve sustainability will also be defined by the stakeholders of the event through appliances that can serve everyone and anyone despite physical or mental shortcomings, through customisable features and ergonomical offerings.
