Ron Arad is an Israeli industrial designer, artist, and architectural designer. Arad’s constant experimentation with the possibilities of materials such as steel, aluminium or polyamide and his radical re-conception of the form and structure of furniture has put him at the forefront of contemporary design, public art and architecture.
Free Standing China are shelves composed in the shape of the map of China. Originally designed for the Shanghai EXPO, it was banned by the Chinese authorities who had issues with the piece’s disclusion of Hong Kong and other border definitions; instead found itself in London, Madrid and Hong Kong.
