Draga & Aurel translates a mixed-media painting into the abstract ‘Astratto’ rug

Astratto by Draga & Aurel is a luxurious rug design for the brand Illulian, renowned for its exquisite handmade rugs. Inspired by Aurel K. Basedow's artwork AKB_23_81, Astratto vividly translates the painting's essence through a sophisticated blend of mixed media techniques.

Incorporating photography, oil paints, resin, acrylics and spray paint. Basedow's original artwork is renowned for its vibrant colours, bold strokes, layered textures and dense brushwork. Abstract in both name and form, Astratto is composed of four distinct elements featuring irregular geometries. These elements can be arranged, juxtaposed and deconstructed according to individual preferences, offering a customisable artistic experience.

For Aurel K. Basedow (who established the multidisciplinary studio Draga & Aurel with Draga Obradovic in 2007), the transition from painting to rug design is a natural evolution, reflecting his deep-rooted fascination with textile design. This interest stemmed from discovering a damaged rug in an antique market, which subsequently influenced his artistic journey. Incorporating textile materials into his compositions, Basedow utilises textures to imbue his paintings with three-dimensionality and materiality.

Astratto is meticulously crafted by hand using traditional knotting and carding techniques. It is available in two exceptional qualities: Platinum 120 and Gold 100. The Platinum 120 variant showcases the utmost luxury with top-quality wool and silk, boasting an impressive 1,80,000 knots per square metre. This intricate craftsmanship results in spectacular sculpted effects that enhance the rug's visual and tactile appeal. Meanwhile, the Gold 100 option offers a timeless charm, crafted from wool and silk with a density of 1,52,000 knots per square metre.

"It is a strange but very natural step to turn one of my paintings into a rug when the rug is very often the starting point of my artwork,” shares Basedow.
