Italy-based multidisciplinary design studio Draga & Aurel's distinctive creative voice resounds at the 2025 edition of NOMAD St. Moritz. The design event unfolds this year from February 20 - 23, 2025, in a new venue: the historic Klinik Gut, a former orthopaedic clinic transformed into a vibrant workshop of design, art and experimentation for the occasion.
The Italian designers' exhibit inside the space is curated by Todd Merrill Studio, the prestigious New York-based contemporary fine art and design gallery, representing them in the United States since 2022. The essence of the installation has shifted from design to art, with painted works by Aurel K. Basedow (who established Draga & Aurel in 2007 with Draga Obradovic), carefully selected by the gallery owner to illustrate his expressive power and vision.
The large collection of mixed-media paintings by Basedow, whose artistic language fuses rhythm, instinctive gestures and compositional rigour, evokes the dynamic of abstract expressionism. The vibrantly coloured decisive brush strokes create free-flowing forms layered beneath trickles of transparent resin. The result is a three-dimensional work that invites viewers to immerse themselves in the details to the point of crossing over the surface and 'touching' the deepest core of the painting.
Completing the evocative art installation is the monumental Maree Ocean Blue Console from the Transparency Matters collection by the multidisciplinary studio and workshop for art, collectible design and furnishing items, presented in a large, custom-made version. This one-off furniture design embodies Draga & Aurel's research into materials, transparency and colour. Inspired by tidal movements and glacial changes, the console glorifies the power of nature with a thick crystalline epoxy resin top crossed by diagonal cuts resembling the flow of water. The brass base features a special metal treatment applied by hand to create a harmonious contrast with the minimalism of the console top.
