Traditional Asian lanterns are a vibrant and integral part of the cultural and historical tapestry of many Asian societies. Crafted from materials such as paper, silk, and bamboo, these lanterns come in various shapes, sizes, and colours, often adorned with intricate designs and calligraphy. Lanterns play a significant role in numerous festivals and celebrations, symbolising prosperity, good fortune, and the dispelling of darkness. These lanterns are not merely decorative items but are imbued with deep cultural meanings and serve as a testament to the rich artistic heritage and communal traditions of Asian cultures.
The ALLTOTEM series designed by British designer Michael Young as part of Michael Young Home is an exclusive collection of 18 product designs including three Artist Proofs, representing an innovative intersection of craft and technology. Utilising extruded aluminium, these sculptural art pieces showcase a variety of shapes that produce semi-random patterns, reminiscent of traditional Asian lanterns. This project fundamentally explores the dynamic relationship between artisanal craftsmanship and technological advancement.
The industrial designer is known in the industry as a complex minimalist. His elegant, exquisite and succinct design aesthetics are favoured by international awards, and his works are collected by prestigious museums and galleries, including the Louvre Museum, The Centre Pompidou and the Victoria & Albert Museum. “It is designed as Industrial Art that interests me, not just as a limited edition, but on a scale of mass production,” the product designer shares.
