Kees de Vries | Eelke van Willegen

Circular movements form the basis of the sturdy metal sculptures by Eelke van Willegen. The deep blue surfaces in Kees de Vries' paintings are bordered by baroque curls. The bright colors enhance the movements and give the spaces they frame extra depth. The heavy metal becomes airy and cheerful, the paintings become dreamy. Eelke van Willegen is a fanatical surfer, and the movements in his work resemble the overtopping waves on which a surfer gains speed and has to keep his balance. The artist in him follows the movements of the surfer here. With Kees de Vries, the rotating movements in the paint, which take on a different shine from every angle, initially draw your gaze into the depth of the blue. But blue in this painting gives no rest, no hold. Your gaze is lost in the depth of the black surface and discovers that black is made up of a wide range of dark colours. Freedom and mobility radiate from the works, these mid-career artists have confidently developed their visual language.
