Jam Session Floor Lamp
A ‘super-candle’ with a sphere on top
With the distinctive veil of irony, disguised beneath a rigorous aesthetic, that defines Piero Lissoni’s design approach, Jam Session is a floor lamp that draws on multiple archetypal references: the torch, the flame, and the architectural plinth.
The lamp consists of a concrete base with three openings designed to host interchangeable light heads, reminiscent of torches or, in the designer’s own words: “super candles.” The concept is simple yet original, born from juxtaposition of different materials and lighting elements with distinct formal languages. Highly versatile in function, Jam Session suits countless applications in both residential and contract settings.
The details behind the design
The slender stems supporting these ‘technological torches’ are made from polished aluminium and terminate in a variety of head designs: either a flute-shaped diffuser, which emits soft indirect ambient light, or a small, polished white opaline triplex glass sphere. The latter, just 9 cm in diameter, appears to bloom delicately from the stem, casting a gentle, focused glow. Both flute and sphere variants are mounted on rods of equal height, available in three sizes: h 182 cm, h 172 cm or h 162 cm (including the base).
The square base (185 x 185 mm, height 120 mm) is made of raw-textured concrete, offering a tactile contrast to the slender, ethereal quality of the stems. The base can accommodate up to three light modules or just one. The stem connects to the base with a simple and engaging mechanism: a twist-and-lock jack system. With a quick movement, the rod slots into place and locks with a half-turn. An electrical contact at the base of the rod activates the light source. This intuitive mechanical system makes it easy to remove and replace the light module with a different variant at any time.
