In the creative tapestry of contemporary art, design, and architecture, a select few designers have embraced light as their chosen medium, skillfully shaping it into captivating works of art. Japanese designer and artist Tokujin Yoshioka is one such luminary whose name shines brightly. His artistic journey has been marked by an unwavering dedication to light, allowing him to transcend the confines of conventional design and architecture. The outcome of his artistic quest is a collection of remarkable pieces that radiate transparency and beauty, captivating audiences worldwide with their exceptional allure.

Yoshioka’s latest exhibition at the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT Gallery 3 in Tokyo, Japan, aptly titled FLAME: Glass Torch and Cauldron, delves into the luminous world of flame, revealing his most recent masterpieces, ‘Glass Torch’ and ‘Glass Cauldron’. These impressive designs, created for the ceremony of the JAPAN GAMES SAGA 2024 (formerly known as the National Sports Festival), are made of transparent glass, a material that has never been used for such a significant purpose before. His inspiration for these glass pieces draws from the indelible impressions of his childhood, where he witnesses the time-honoured tradition of Japanese wooden torches, known as taimatsu, alight during shrine and temple festivals.

Born in 1967, Yoshioka’s journey in the world of art and design has been nothing short of remarkable. He honed his skills working alongside visionaries such as Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake, before establishing his own studio, the TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA INC., in 2000. Today, the 56-year-old is celebrated globally for his contributions to various creative fields. His portfolio boasts a range of iconic pieces including the ‘Sakura Torch’ created for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the ethereal glass bench ‘Water Block’, displayed at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, the crystal-clear ‘VENUS’ chair, the prismatic marvel of ‘Rainbow Church,’ and the exquisite ‘KOU-AN’ glass teahouse.

With numerous international awards and accolades to his name, Yoshioka’s works have also found a permanent home in the collections of esteemed museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Musee National d’Art Moderne, and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).

On view from September 14 - November 5, 2023, the design exhibition’s centrepiece is an array of torches that take centre stage, each characterised by a silhouette of straight lines that converge into a softly curved opening at their apex. The glass design embodies delicate elegance with cutting-edge design, and its ethereal transparency beautifully represents the harmony between nature and human achievement. As the torchbearer ignites the flame within this mesmerising glass structure, it symbolises the convergence of ancient traditions with contemporary design, creating a captivating visual spectacle that leaves a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to witness it.

The ‘Glass Cauldron’ takes the concept of transparency even further. This luminous piece designed for the ceremony of lighting the flame, is a true testament to Yoshioka’s artistic genius. Its transparent structure defies convention and represents a daring departure from the custom solid, opaque cauldron. As the flame dances within, it is visible from all angles, providing a breathtaking display that invites viewers to contemplate the beauty of the flame.

However, FLAME is not just about the torch and the cauldron. It also presents other works that have defined this designer’s career. One such piece is the ‘Water Block’ glass bench, a signature creation that captures the essence of his design philosophy. The furniture design's transparency and light-refracting properties evoke a sense of weightlessness, inviting visitors to sit, reflect, and engage with its beauty.

Glass, a material inherently shaped by heat, is remarkably fragile and highly reactive to the influence of an open flame, making it prone to breakage. In addressing this challenge, the Japanese artist and his team developed an innovative solution: a double-layered glass structure crafted from two separate pieces, which allows air to circulate as the liquid fuel burns, while efficiently dispersing heat in the handle. This approach not only reinforces the durability of the glass torches but also preserves their captivating aesthetic, ensuring they can withstand the rigours of their intended use.

Further enriching the immersive exhibition is a special garment created in collaboration with the Miyake Design Studio intended for the cauldron lighting ceremony. This collaborative creation, much like the designer’s work, exemplifies the fusion of art and function, delivering a fashion piece that is both visually striking as it is functional. The ceremony itself is set to be a striking highlight, elevating the exhibition's experience.

One of the most anticipated events during the exhibition is the ceremonial lighting of the ‘Glass Cauldron’ outside the gallery’s walls. This special display promises to immerse viewers in a unique journey into the world of light. As the flame within the cauldron comes to life, it serves as a radiant beacon of creativity and innovation, reminding us of the profound impact that art and design can have on our world.

FLAME provides a glimpse into the wondrous possibilities that unfold when an artist commits their career to expanding the horizons of creativity. In Yoshioka’s world, light, fire, and glass aren’t just materials—they form the core of a creative universe. The displayed pieces encourage us to reflect on the convergence of nature, tradition, and forward-thinking design.
