As a metaphor for boundless potential, blue skies will set the stage for the 20th edition of Design Miami from December 3 – 8, 2024, celebrating experimental and optimistic design ventures through collectible design galleries, curios, special projects and collaborations. Against the design fair's overarching theme—'Blue Sky'—The Future Perfect (TFP) contemporary design gallery will propel modern design into uncharted realms, presenting an ambitious showcase that merges tradition with innovation. With a meticulously curated roster of nearly 100 distinct works by over 20 global designers, the gallery's presentation will serve as both a reflection and a revelation, annunciating the tenets of craftsmanship while redefining the semantics of contemporary design.
"TFP's exhibition space serves as a continued exploration of bifurcation, leveraging the concept of day and night occurring under a singular sky," reads the official release. A dual narrative lies at the heart of the design exhibition, where one half presents a "constellation of objects under a blue sky" that challenges the familiar to beget unprecedented forms, while the other celebrates New Delhi-based artist Vikram Goyal's US debut at Design Miami 2024.
TFP's lighting design showcase will adorn the show's conceptual sky, where craft, ideation and experimentation will converge. New York-based lighting designer Lindsey Adelman's glass chandelier will exemplify her expertise in shaping transformative forms from the ingenious use of raw materials. Expanding this narrative of illumination, Korean-American ceramicist Jane Yang-D’Haene will debut her cloud-like ceramic chandelier complemented by a series of stools that reflect her signature aesthetic. Meanwhile, Brooklyn-based sculptor Karl Zahn will present a pendant light adorned with gold leaf, imbuing his design with a celestial resonance.
Furniture design will take on a sculptural portrayal through American artist Chris Wolston's ceramic coffee table featuring hand-shaped motifs and the Mafafa chair design, which is interwoven with over 50 overlapping hand effigies and exudes a bodily exuberance with functionality.
In contrast, the Netherlands-based designer Floris Wubben will elevate brickwork with a console and mirror crafted in glazed black and white clay, marking a refined evolution from his previous terracotta explorations. Complementing these objects, Brooklyn, New York-based designers Chen Chen and Kai Williams will debut their Geology Mirror Cabinet, an extension of their experimental Geology series, where natural forms meet avant-garde geometry.
Sculptural artistry in The Future Perfect's showcased collection transcends conventional boundaries with an interplay of material, culture and form. MyungJiin Kim's earthy, owl-inspired pieces at the design event will captivate visitors with their adept pairing of colour and material, creating a tactile harmony that reflects her Korean heritage. On the other hand, Los Angeles-based artist Leena Similu's ceramic art will delve into her West African lineage, weaving ancestral narratives and matriarchal power into playful forms. The sculptural designs are imbued with her signature facial pareidolia as a testament to personal and cultural introspection.
Meanwhile, American sculptor Ian Collings will channel geological temporality in his sculptural art objects, where organic and industrial forms merge to reflect themes of emergence and interconnectedness. Furthermore, Kristin Victoria Barron's smaller-scale works extending her Origin collection will translate dreamlike visions into tangible forms that meld mythical motifs with utopian aesthetics.
New York-based Thompson Street Studio's installation will herald a seamless art, craft, and sustainability synthesis encapsulated in a commanding fabric screen that defines the fair's transitional axis. Crafted from antique and upcycled fabrics in neutral tones and seasonal dyes, the piece is a tactile narrative of texture, pattern and natural colour.
TFP's 'Booth Side II' will unveil Indian designer Vikram Goyal's debut at Design Miami, where rich artisanal heritage coalesces with modern design. A striking bronze wall relief, a conceptual bridge between the booth's dual perspectives of sky and Earth, will anchor a curated collection of Goyal's limited-edition product designs. His oeuvre of collectible design objects will include tables, benches, sconces and a chandelier, each adroitly crafted to interplay with light and movement. "Vikram's metalwork techniques are striking in their complexity and evoke a sense of wonder," says David Alhadeff, founder of The Future Perfect. "His work embodies the spirit and mastery of traditional artisanal techniques, transforming India's rich craft heritage into contemporary, show-stopping designs," he adds.
Some of the other exhibits that will be displayed at the design exhibition include Austrian designer Laurids Gallée’s sculptural wall lighting, a stoneware collection by Bahamian artist Anina Major, vibrant lamp designs by Florida-based designer Autumn Casey, glass artist John Hogan's miniature objects, Cody Hoyt's animated vessels and ceramic sculptures by American ceramic artist Eric Roinestad.
The Future Perfect's showcase at Design Miami 2024 is on view from December 3 – 8, 2024, at the Convention Center Drive & 19th Street, Miami Beach (Booth Number G16).
