Tracing back to its historical origins as a wheel while also delivering sharp astronomical insights, the circle is one of the most important and recognisable shapes found in both nature and the man made world. With its lack of edges it holds a symbol of limitless possibilities – starts and endings. Taking cues from the distinctive shape, Dutch Invertuals, a collective design network and studio brings together 20 artists to create 17 artworks that revolve around these ideas and themes of the circle. Exhibited at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (MAKK) in Cologne, Germany, the exhibition space is decorated with sculptural art pieces placed on elevated rust coloured platforms that are sprawled across the textured, grey, open floors.

The applied art museum creates a vivifying atmosphere with a sea of calm tones surrounded by sprawling high ceilings, white columns and sheer curtains. The exhibition commenced on the 17th January 2022 at the MAKK and will be up on showcase until 24th April, 2022.

The collective artists come together and push the ideas of what the circle represents to them, questioning the validity of the shape in context to social, political, cultural and environmental issues. Thinking outside the box, artists have played around with the designs, materials, compositions and production. Dutch Invertuals’ co-founder Wendy Plomp says that ‘The Circle’ is an expanding collection of works, where a community is created through a creative thinking process. The Circle presented works done by artists Anna Resei, Audrey Large x Théophile Blandet, Bram Vanderbeke, Carlo Lorenzetti, Christian+Jade, Edhv, Elena Blazquez, Germans Ermičs x The New Raw, Johanna Seelemann, Laura Kluge, Elly Feldstein, Moonseop Seo, Philipp Weber, Rogier Arents, Sander Hagelaar, Wendy Andreu and Willem van Hooff.

‘The Circle’ will remain on display from 17th January 2022 to 24 April, 2022 at Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (MAKK) in Cologne, Germany
