Following years of the COVID-19 pandemic and embracing the ‘new normal’ of indoor confinement, outdoor living areas have surged in popularity, transforming into havens of relaxation, where individuals can reconnect with the natural world. As a result of the growing appreciation for quality time spent with loved ones, the desire for well-suited settings accommodating both aspects has increased manifold. To bridge the gap between the indoors and outdoors, Studio Piet Boon, the Dutch design studio established by Piet Boon, has meticulously curated a selection of furniture collections that artfully melt the distinctions between experiences in nature and crafted living spaces.

Born in 1958, Piet Boon established his studio in 1983, beginning as a small design firm in the traditional village of Oostzaan, near Amsterdam in The Netherlands. The studio primarily focused on designing custom homes. Over time, Studio Piet Boon evolved into a worldwide design studio, amassing a portfolio of clients from the private, corporate, and hospitality sectors. Since 2005, the studio has been crafting luxury furniture collections and a diverse array of interior products like flooring, hardware, lighting, and tableware. Notably, the Piet Boon Kitchen collection was introduced in 2015, followed by the Piet Boon Bathroom collection in 2020.

In the recent indoor furniture collection, the Dutch designer introduces three indoor furniture designs named CARA, KEKKE and BOB. Alongside these, a comprehensive fresh outdoor collection called the RAF lounge series is on the horizon, slated for release in early 2024. Studio Piet Boon was inspired by nature's pigments in this endeavour of blending the outdoors with our indoor spaces seamlessly. The product designers employed an earthy palette for the same, including gentle greens and soft browns, emulating shades of nature.

The CARA solid and swivel chair showcases upper cushions adorned with lavish pleats that complement the fabric of its sophisticated closed base. The chair design’s shell is enveloped in high-resilience foam and polyester fibres. At the same time, the leg is upholstered, resulting in an elevated sense of sophistication and comfort. The KEKKE lounge chair and its matching KEKKE ottoman are thoughtfully crafted to offer a luxurious and comfortable seating experience. With a lower seat height, the chair has a tilted seating area upholstered in soft leather. It includes a separate back cushion that enhances both comfort and style. The chairs are available with powder-coated steel frames in black, white, bronze, or gunmetal finishes.

The BOB Sofa, a new addition following the success of the BOB armchair in 2022, is available in both two-seater and three-seater versions. With its fluid silhouette, the sofa design is suitable for more compact indoor spaces, whether in residential, corporate, or hospitality settings. With its soft contours, the product design features a tall backrest with deep cushioning for user comfort. The distinct overlapping elements at the back can be upholstered with leather or fabrics from the Piet Boon collection. For a striking contrast, the sofa's cushions can be covered in different materials.

To illustrate the harmonious interplay between our interior and exterior environments, the RAF series comprises a furniture collection designed for versatile use across indoor and outdoor settings. The RAF lounge series consists of mobile rounded cushions on its daybeds, perfectly aligning with the sun's path while resting upon an architecturally inspired frame. Crafted with weather-resistant components, the daybeds are built to withstand various weather conditions, guaranteeing long-lasting sturdiness. The RAF armchair and loveseat exhibit sculptural forms accompanied by plush cushioning. With an array of upholstery choices available from the Piet Boon fabric collection, these pieces offer versatility across different spatial settings, ensuring design coherence. The addition of untreated teak frames by the furniture designers further elevates the aesthetic appeal of the series. As the BOB sofa, the upholstery can be personalised from the selection offered by the Piet Boon fabric collection.

Complementing the RAF seating, the RAF side table is a fitting companion. Its robust structure, available in natural untreated teak or optional concrete, introduces a visual appeal. Like the entire RAF series, the table design is conceived to mature gracefully over time. Lastly, the RAF storage basket elegantly provides storage space for items such as towels, books, or magazines. The basket is made from studio-made, high-performance fabric.

For the collections, the designers at Studio Piet Boon have curated materials that attest to indoor and outdoor environments at ease, ensuring a seamless spatial and experiential transition between both. The collections aim to highlight how the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces are becoming less distinct in our modern lives, resulting in a stronger connection to the natural environment. As these spaces blend, humans are encouraged to seek balance in their daily lives, acknowledging and embracing the interconnectedness of the environments they frequently inhabit.
