Although a utilitarian necessity, lights and lamps can often feature as decorative elements or mediums of expressions when designed to evoke natural features or transcendental happenings around us. As part of the upcoming Fuorisalone 2022, Italian lighting brand Masiero will showcase a range of such abstracted lighting pieces at their ‘Rivelazioni’ exhibition in Brera Design District. The brand has collaborated with several designers for this exhibition, which has been conceptualised by Studio Milo. Amongst the designers whose works will be displayed in the gallery space are Milanese designer Sara Moroni, Italian designer Oriano Favaretto, France based designer and interior architect, Pierre Gonalons and Giovanni Battista Gianola, who is the founder of design and communication studio, Argine. The sculpturesque arrangement, curated by Studio Milo, will light up the Via Statuto, 16 during Milan Design Week 2022.

Studio Milo has designed the exhibition space to reveal each design one by one, thus giving each piece of work optimum attention. The discovery of each piece will then be met with surprise and awe, like a precious jewel or a work of art. Concealed by sinuous drapes coloured in different shades such as white, ivory and dove grey, the suspensions and floor lamps will beckon the visitor with their metallic glimmer leaking through the organically falling partitions within the exhibition space. The entrance of the ‘Rivelazioni’ exhibition will feature a series of flag panels of different heights framing the front display windows, thus creating a physical stage to usher visitors in. The display windows will also play videos, thus transmitting a glimpse of the showcases within the gallery on retro style TV screens. This soft aura projected initially at the entrance will also spill into the interiors of the exhibition with two layers of semi-transparent fabric sheets falling vertically from the ceiling.

Guided by these free-falling fabric sheets, one will be able to witness each Masiero piece placed on rough concrete podiums, unexpectedly. Displayed like works of art in a gallery, these lights will take on the role of art pieces instead of just utilitarian lighting devices meant to illuminate. By arranging these pragmatic objects in an artistic space, they will help create an immersive experience enhanced by contorted lights and shadows. Some of the lights that will remain on display from 6 June to 12 June 2022 at the Brera district in Milano are Sara Moroni’s ‘Posy’ collection, Oriano Favaretto’s ‘Iglù’ collection, Pierre Gonalons’s ‘Horo’ collection and Giovanni Battista Gianola’s ‘Sound’.

‘Iglù’ collection by Oriano Favaretto takes its name from the woven mesh mantle that is reminiscent of Inuit architecture. Made out of metal spheres, one half of which is solid and finished with patinated bronze finish and the other half, enclosed in a matte gold painted metal mesh, the lamps are suspended mid-air to appear like illuminated goblets floating around in space. The metal mesh covering on these globes further creates an interesting luminous imprint. The collection comprises suspension lights, wall, table and floor lamps, and chandeliers, which are made of several Iglù globes arranged to surround a central fulcrum. All these lamps come in several different sizes to fit in any space.

Sara Moroni’s ‘Posy’ collection also plays with spheres to create a series of suspension lamps, floor lamps, table lamps, wall lamps and chandeliers made out of two contrasting noble materials. Designed as a tribute to the floral kingdom, Posy lights evoke the soft and poetic aura projected by inhabitants of the plant world. Supported by thin brass bars touched up with a galvanic finish, the spherical opal glass lampshades appear like sprouted elements, just like flowers that emerge from stems and branches. When comprising more than one circular blob, these luminary objects are dotted with circular lamps of different sizes, just like the inconsistent size and shape of flowers and fruits found in nature. These different sized opal glass pieces are sturdily supported by longer bars made out of brass and shorter bars adorned with micro striped ribbed decoration.

All the pieces that will dot the ‘Rivelazioni’ exhibition are abstracted recreations of natural elements. A selfie wall at the end of the exhibition space will be dedicated to taking souvenir photos of the design week. Illuminated with 23 golden Horo suspension lights, it will serve as both an interactive feature at the exhibition and as a brilliantly designed and lit up space to capture in a souvenir image reminiscent of the design festival and the ‘Rivelazioni’ event.

The ‘Rivelazioni’ exhibition will remain on display from 6 to 12 June 2022 at Via Statuto 16 in the Brera Design District in Milan, Italy.
