British graphic designer and ceramic artist, Steven Edwards showcases a series of organically twining ceramic works at the Vessel Gallery in London, UK. Edwards has created a series of works titled ‘Infinite Folds’ where the exteriors of the cylindrical vases are warped and folded almost as they were made from woven textiles. Edwards showcases his ‘process-led’ making activity through a series of colourful, graphic and almost animated ceramic works. Using bespoke tools and a hydraulic press, he brings out the innate qualities of ceramics. The artist’s detailed and scrupulous process gets him the reaction he wants from the clay. The exhibition is currently on display at the Vessel gallery and will remain open to visitors until the 23rd of March, 2022.

The physicality of the clay is manipulated and put under stress to show its most textured and malleable state; the clay is moulded and sculpted using methods of utmost detail and techniques whose outcome is often unpredictable. The folds in his work create a sequence of bends and crevices, with the ribbed texture and bright colours that tantalise you with their delicious taffy-like appearance. The series is exciting and pops out and comes in a variety of colours with some pieces being monotonous and others featuring vibrant colours. In Infinite Folds, Edwards explores the themes of dualities through his work; the incongruity between the visually distorted and the technically precise, the movement in the stillness of the form and the deception between the synthetic and natural.

Having been introduced to ceramics as a young student, Steven Edwards went on to study applied arts and pursued graphic design. Although at the top of a highly successful graphic design career, the love for ceramics called to him and Edwards completed his Masters of Arts in Ceramics from the University of Creative Arts, Farnham in 2018. Since then, his work has been displayed at contemporary art and design shows like British Ceramics Biennial, London Craft Week, London Design Festival and Paris Design Week.

The exhibition ‘Infinite Folds’ by Steven Edwards will remain on display from 23 February 2022 to 23 March 2022 at the Vessel gallery in London, UK.
