For over five years, Mayfair, London has established itself as an important design district for the London Design Festival. The district is home to renowned design galleries, auction houses, luxury brands, automotive businesses, retailers, fine establishments, cultural institutions and innumerable gastronomic hotspots. Ever since its establishment in 2017, the Mayfair Design District has been subjected to massive cultural growth while preserving its heritage and historic character. For the London Design Festival 2022 which also marks the 20th edition of the design event, the district will continue to support the iconic design scene with the generous support of the leading construction and interior company Westgreen. The exhibition will feature art and design-led exhibitions, design installations, discourses, auctions, festivals, fairs and special projects – promoting the creative identity of the illustrious district. Mayfair marked its late-night district display on September 19, 2022, and will run the course of the festival until September 25, 2022.
Mayfair continues to be an affluent district in London's Western End . The region has been home to numerous famous personalities ranging from the likes of American musician Jimmy Hendrix and Baroque composer George Frederic Handel. The area, has long been a curcible of diverse cultural influences. The design enclave will showcase the finest in collectable and contemporary design during LDF 2022, solidifying Mayfair's status as a major worldwide destination for the decorative arts.
The first-ever artificial intelligence system created to express every aroma and flavour using a broad vocabulary will be made available to the globe by Scentmatic Ltd, a business firm that specialises in olfactory experiences. Kaorium verbalises olfactory sensations through language using a natural language processing technology. The system can be an important landmark in the world of developing artificial fragrances. Furthermore, luxury lifestyle brand Jo Malone London will showcase the works of Martyn Thompson at its Marylebone Townhouse, featuring photographs, textiles and ceramics alongside its second design edition collection. All of the components in the collection are highlighted by tile-like product designs and a calming colour scheme.
The vintage furniture gallery Béton Brut will also host a spectacle. The design gallery is originally based in East London and is curated by furniture dealer Sophie Pearce. For LDF 2022, the gallery takes up residency at Paul Smith’s London flagship shop where they evolve their monochrome palette in a contrast with Paul Smith’s signature vibrancy. While Béton Brut lives up to a vintage design standard, Gallery FUMI’s exposition ‘Haptic Nature’ hones the works of Andreas Voukenas and Steven Petrides as they continue to explore new sculptural furniture in polished bronze, plaster and textured cast aluminium.
In an interesting tribute to the workmanship and design ideologies of the architect and furniture designer Max Clendinning, Sadie Coles HQ will present a furniture exhibition. ‘Interior Eulogies’ is a glimmering representation of the enigmatic and intuitive creative oeuvre that Clendinning possessed and often displayed through his furniture pieces, sculptures, and interior design. His works will be displayed alongside those of his partner, Ralph Adron. Pointing out the sequence of interesting furniture designs, Sotheby’s will unveil Irish designer Joseph Walsh’s ‘Gesture Series’. The new body of work by the industrial designer comprises functional yet boldly sculptural pieces of furniture. For instance, his Gesture, One Bench from 2022, is a sinuously curved black bench that transcends into a different dimension of sculpted functional design.
The ‘Reborn Project’ by Ginori 1735 will mark the collaboration with the David Gill Gallery and many prominent names in the world of art and design. The galleries collaborate to give porcelains a second life as a radiating offering. The 54 items chosen by the artists will contextually display both representational and abstract designs. Next, the Italian brand Achille Salvagni Atelier will be presenting ‘The Wonder Room’ with selection of objects from the founder Achille Salvagni and the weave artisanal seller Toyine’s personal collection. The design exhibition shapes up the personal desires and the designers’ memories that have unfolded as textures, sculptures, upholstered fabrics and furniture pieces.
Upscaling the design platter further will be the works, talk programmes, and installations by Laz Emporium,- an exhibition space in London, Curio,- an online design platform, Madhuria, Inhabit Hotels, the New Craftsmen- a furniture design studio, Mint gallery’s collaborative display with Lukas Cober, Draga & Aurel, Daan De Wit and the design display by Olivia Paterson and Alma Zevi . In a commitment to work towards displaying design excellence, the Mayfair Design District is all set to highlight itself as a hub of creativity and innovation, while centre-lining the importance of sustainability in design.
