Domaine de Boisbuchet was founded in 1989 by Alexander von Vegesack, who envisioned a utopian community where design could meet innovative education. Focused around design, architecture and nature, the Boisbuchet campus spans over an area of 150 hectares, far from the city, in the pristine, serene area of Charente, France. Since its conception, Domaine de Boisbuchet has been a cradle for professionals and students to innovate and learn how to approach design problems. The research institute is surrounded by forests, fields, waters and little hills allowing the natural beauty of Western France to act as a sanctuary for designers and thinkers.

Over the last 30 years, the number of women approaching holistic design has increased tremendously and the Landscapes of Design is a celebratory exhibit to acknowledge and promote their works. These works, although carried out in different mediums and formats, have borrowed inspiration from the serenity that suffuses the Boisbuchet campus. Mathias Schwartz-Clauss assisted by Franca Spielmann has curated the works of the women at the heart of Domaine de Boisbuchet to represent an ethical relationship between classical modernism and nature. As a consequence of this, one can witness pieces crafted out of both industrial and antiquated methods and techniques and derived from sociological, ecological and artistic investigations of their creators.

Some of the designers and artists whose work will be displayed at the exhibition include Aino Aalto & Alvar Aalto, Charles Eames & Ray Eames, Miriam Josi, Sabine Marcelis & Brit van Nerven, Charles Perdew & Edna Perdew, and Sara Ricciardi, amongst others.

‘Landscapes of Design, women at the heart of Domaine de Boisbuchet’ will remain on display from 4th February to 31st July, 2022 at Frac Centre-Val de Loire in Orléans, France.
