KIDZ creates a lamp from a lizard-head origami prototype

The Origami Lamp by KIDZ is a simply designed paper pendant lamp, easy to assemble and disassemble. Developed from a very simple origami figure – the head of a lizard, the lamp is a fun product that can be manually assembled without the usage of any extra tools.

Founded in 2013, KIDZ is an architecture and design studio based in St. Petersburg, Russia. The multidisciplinary design firm works on all kinds of indoor and outdoor projects. With a special focus on user experience, they create unique products and innovative designs that lend new meaning to the spaces they inhabit.

The Origami paper lamp can be flatly packed and easily transported, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the packaging and transportation of the product. The origami design of the luminaire permits the product to be used in three positions, each providing a different level of light diffusion. When closed up, the pendant lamp fills the space it inhabits with a soft glow.

In addition to its innovative design, the product has been created with materials that have a minimal negative impact on the environment. The paper lamp eschews mimicking the traditional bulky lamps made out of sophisticated materials and elegant finishes. The usage of paper ensures that the product is lightweight and compostable. In addition to this, the packaging of the lamp is also made up of dry nutrient substrates with grass seeds, which can be nurtured with water to grow edible grass for pets, thus reducing the overall waste production of the product.
