In a world where scent is often overlooked as an art form, TABLEAU and En Doft have come together to celebrate the beauty of fragrance with the launch of ‘Dripping Rhubarb,’ conceived as a tool for interior design and a pathway to Gesamtkunstwerk ("a total work of art"). This room perfume is not just an olfactory delight but a sensory experience, intertwined with the creativity of ten multidisciplinary artists from across Europe. Inspired by the abstract scents of nature and handcrafted in Copenhagen, Denmark, ‘Dripping Rhubarb’ is a testament to the harmonious fusion of art, design, and fragrance.

Behind this captivating scent lies a year-long collaboration between TABLEAU's founder Julius Værnes Iversen, and independent perfumer Emmanuel Martini from En Doft. Their collaborative journey led them to the creation of this fragrance that transcends the ordinary and transports one to a world where reality blends seamlessly with imagination. At the heart of this fragrance is rhubarb, a plant deeply rooted within Nordic countries, and known for its striking visual appearance and distinctive aroma. Subsequently, ‘Dripping Rhubarb’ opens with top notes that capture the fresh essence of the plant. Rhubarb's unique character has been expertly translated into a fragrance using four key ingredients—green, fruity, juicy, and sour. As you inhale the scent, you are greeted with the fresh, crisp aroma of rhubarb, a sensation that awakens your senses and prepares you for a journey through the surreal.

The heart notes of ‘Dripping Rhubarb’ are not just a blend of scents; they are a window into the memories and emotions of Iversen. These notes include abstract rheum x hybridum, Hatsuzakura tulip, and tiny green pea, and inspired by the broken green tulip stems that once lay on the floor of his father's flower shop. These heart notes add a personal touch to the fragrance, evoking nostalgia and a renewed connection to nature. As the fragrance lingers, the base notes emerge, taking you deeper into the sensory journey. With woody and deep accents, including wet forest accord, Patchouli, tree moss oil, Galbanum, and artificial Geosmin, ‘Dripping Rhubarb’ transports you to the forest floor. These base notes provide a grounding effect, a reminder to stay connected to the earth beneath your feet.

Art meets perfume: The 'Dripping Rhubarb' exhibition

To celebrate the launch of ‘Dripping Rhubarb,’ TABLEAU has curated an exhibition that brings together art and fragrance in a harmonious, spatial symphony. Ten artists from across Europe have created functional and multidisciplinary artworks, each inspired by and designed to accompany the perfume. These artists, Leo Maher, Espace Aygo, Gemma Barr, Heim & Villadrich, Viktor Miklos, Annelie Grimwade, Forever Studio, Laurids Gallée, Gijs Assman, and Adir Yakobi, have poured their creativity into crafting functional artworks that resonate with the essence of ‘Dripping Rhubarb.’

This collaboration between fragrance and art has given birth to a collection of works that are visually intriguing and deeply connected to the perfume's core. Each piece is a testament to the power of collaboration and the way art can enhance and elevate the sensory experience of fragrance.

En Doft, the luxury brand behind ‘Dripping Rhubarb,’ was born out of the collaboration between France-born perfume designer Emmanuel Martini and Stockholm-based design studio All Matters. Martini creates all the scents in his studio in Copenhagen, producing them in small batches. En Doft's signature lies in using high-quality ingredients to develop perfume oil that delivers a long-lasting and distinctive sensory experience.

TABLEAU, a multidisciplinary studio, gallery, and concept store based in Copenhagen, is the driving force behind this unique collaboration. Originally a flower shop, TABLEAU has evolved into a creative hub that blurs the lines between art and design. They work closely with both emerging and established creatives worldwide, fostering a community that thrives on breaking the divisions between different forms of artistic expression.

Green, fruity and woody, ‘Dripping Rhubarb’ is more than just a room perfume; it is a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and the sensory beauty and allure of nature. This unusual fragrance, born out of a close partnership between TABLEAU and En Doft, takes you on a journey through the abstract scents of nature, evoking memories, emotions, and a profound connection to the world around us. With the added dimension of art, this launch celebrates the fusion of scent and creativity, inviting us all to explore the boundaries of art and design. You can purchase the scent online at En Doft’s website, or visit the TABLEAU Concept Store, to immerse yourself in its captivating aroma. For a truly unforgettable experience, make your way to the TABLEAU showroom, where the 'Dripping Rhubarb' exhibition is on display.

The launching exhibition for 'Dripping Rhubarb' is one view from August 24 - September 16, 2023, at the Tableau Showroom, Grønnegade 41, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
