At first glance, the Lua Lamp appears like an animated character that has jumped straight out of a cartoon show and is ready to bounce around and communicate in nasal voices. While its lamp handle and cap together appear like a helmet, the circular luminaire and the holder at the bottom resemble the face and body of a cartoon character respectively. Inspired by the shape of the stackable circular bands that kids love to play with, the Lua Lamp is sculpted to appeal to younger generations, while also fulfilling the role of a pragmatic luminaire. Created by the Spanish studio, Dezero Estudio, the simple yet playful shape and form of the luminaire grant it the status of a desired utilitarian object.
Based in Gandia in Valencia, Spain, Dezero Estudio dabbles in product design, creating all sorts of indoor utilitarian objects. With a special focus on sustainability, the firm always attempts to use natural or recycled materials to create products that are defined by simple forms and are easy to use. Their most recent creation, the Lua Lamp is defined by similar features and is versatile enough to be used both as a portable luminaire and as a static one. It comes in two versions: Lua Nature and Lua Child.
While the design of the Lua lamps is entirely inspired by the stackable toys that kids are so fond of, the Lua Nature and Lua Child lamps differ in colour. The Lua Nature lamp is characterised by muted and earthy tones and the Lua Child lamp is pop pink, bearing sparkly blue dots on its surface, thus attracting kids towards it. Both of these lamps are built to feature either as static luminaires that can warmly light up interior spaces or serve as a guiding portable light in outdoor spaces. The design ensures that the lamp appears complete both with or without its base.
Both the versions of the Lua lamp are created using recycled materials, thus ensuring minimum environmental impact. In the Child version of the lamp, plastic recycled from containers, PET bottles and plastic caps make up the body and helmet of the lamp, while the handle, buttons and dial are made out of soft silicone which is both ecological, hygienic and soft, thus ensuring that it is pleasant to touch. The Lua Nature lamp, on the other hand, is made out of a mix of coconut fibres and recycled plastic, while the handle is made out of oak to make for a sturdy grip and warm appearance. The usage of hybrid material to build the body of the lamp ensures that it appears natural. Each Lua lamp, produced by injecting plastic into two moulds, comprises at least 85% recycled plastic.
The portable feature of the Lua lamps ensure that they can be carried anywhere for usage without the dependency of being plugged in. The simple interface of the lamp, featuring a singular button on top to turn the lamp on or off further ensures that kids can also use it just as easily as adults. With a chargeable feature that ensures the usage of the lamp for 24 long hours, one can pack it up and go on a trek without the added stress or responsibility of charging it. By tilting the lamp in different directions, one can modify the ambience created by it in indoor spaces, as well. This charming and friendly lamp serves to act both as an imaginary friend to kids as well as a source of nostalgia for adults.
