Contemporary design in India is a fascinating blend of innovation and tradition, with modern aesthetics weaving in seamlessly with echoes of the nation's rich cultural past. The United Kingdom-based event organising magnate Montgomery Group announced during the India Art Fair 2024, the launch of Design Mumbai, a new international trade event, in response to India’s growing and fifth-largest economy in the world. The design event is the first contemporary design show in India with a global orientation and exhibitor presence, showcasing leading brands, manufacturers and designers.

The four-day event with selected VIP consumer access will take place from November 6 to 9, 2024, at Jio World Garden in the heart of Mumbai, India. The event will feature well-known and up-and-coming designers from all over the world who work in furniture, lighting, materials, kitchen and bathroom design, office design, wall and floor coverings, and outdoor living sectors of the interior product industry. There will also be an opportunity to view international showcases and engage with rising local design talent.

“India’s creativity, natural capital, vast reservoir of skills and technology, and rich history should be more widely recognised and celebrated. I’m happy to engage with Design Mumbai as a new platform that can broadcast the design wealth of this extraordinary subcontinent,” shares British designer Tom Dixon.

Ian Rudge, co-founder of 100% Design, the UK’s most successful design event, renowned event organiser Michael Dynan, and designer, brand owner, event organizer and TV presenter Piyush Suri are the three show production and design experts who will be leading the team. They have executed successful events such as Suri's Handmade in Britain, Dynan's Design Shanghai, and Rudge's 100% Design. With a collective expertise of over 60 years, Design Mumbai is collectively the team's debut release work.

Design Mumbai aims to capitalize on the remarkable desire for design in India by providing a well-selected and refined selection of exhibitors. This will allow audiences in the interior design and architecture sectors to interact with the finest in modern design. Design Mumbai aspires to be an industry tool on par with the top international trade shows, offering networking opportunities and exposure to the newest and most inventive new product designs.

Participating designers and brands include UK-based product designer Michael Young, Zaha Hadid Architects, and Danish sculptor and ceramicist Naja Utzon Popov, whose custom installations go well with her rug designs and lamp designs. Local exhibitors include INKA, which specialises in linen and tableware with an Indo-European flair, and Loco Design, whose stable of brands produces extremely modern and handcrafted furniture designs and accessories. The exhibitors include several widely appreciated international brands and designers.

“In Design Mumbai, we have found a perfect alliance, an ambitious event that comes at the right time for India’s fast-paced, maturing market. We are delighted to be a part of the show and look forward to this path-breaking event as a founding exhibitor,” shares Parminder Pal Singh, Co-founding director of Loco.

The future of modern design is shaped by the convergence of innovation and tradition in Design Mumbai 2024, which emerges as the leading example of India's design evolution. This innovative trade event, which features an impressive roster of both local and international designers, offers a dynamic investigation of many design concepts.
