Milanese design brand Marta Sala Éditions presented their recent collaboration with Federico Peri and Lazzarini and Pickering Architetti during Milan Design Week. The Clin d'Oeil collection, displayed by the Italian brand at the design fair, is characterised by rectilinear geometric forms composed into minimally ostentatious pieces, and is thus, a quintessential representation of the brand’s aesthetic and style. Evocative of yesteryear elegance, the pieces feature a balanced rendition of subtle and bold colours and forms.
Clin d'Oeil serves as the initiation of a new chapter for interior designer Marta Sala’s eponymous brand. It hints towards the different aesthetic combinations that one can create by juxtaposing the offerings of different worlds. The addition of ‘Éditions’ to Marta Sala was the designer’s first attempt to usher in external voices and stories within the creative ecosystem of the brand. Marta’s designs are known for their extensively researched production techniques and inclination to produce unique objects. These defining characteristics are also witnessed in the studios and designers that the brand collaborates with.
Federico Peri, the Italian designer behind this collection, has paid special attention to materials and craftsmanship to create a series expressing the brand's identity. Combining his tendency to craft high-quality objects with the brand’s inclination to a definitively linear and spartan design aesthetic, Peri was able to create designs that are charming and that exude nostalgia for the past. This demanding job to create a collection that fit well with the brand’s identity, while also carrying the designer’s branding, was a happy experience that left ‘a smile’ on Peri’s face.
Washed in vibrant colours and cultured with refined shapes and forms, the furnishings designed by Peri fulfil the brand’s dual theme of ascribing to defined taste as well as offering new products that can enrich spaces in new ways.
Rome based design firm Lazzarini and Pickering Architetti’s pieces for Marta Sala’s latest collection are ornamental. Defined by some elegant features such as tapering fabric, twisted metal and tangled frames, they are composed into cohesive formats that serve the utilitarian purpose accredited to them very well. Some of the pieces designed by the design studio include the Wanda Full armchair enriched by brass armrests, stools and seatings defined by angular edges, a sculptural candelabra titled Lucifero, a chic cushion touted Marta and a few vases. Inspired by the fashion industry, each piece is built to dominate a space like a true protagonist.
While Lucifero is crafted by twisting a simple thread of metal such that it creates an illusion of a disbalanced piece of object, Marta commands a strong aura with its mane-like fringe hanging charmingly. Woven using some iconic fabrics upholstered by Loro Piana Interiors, such as cashmere, pure wool and linen, these cushions are a perfect balance of tradition and innovation. Each piece created by Lazzarini and Pickering Architetti sits handsomely under the categorisation of sartorial furniture and consequently brings them closer to the idea of couture that Marta Sala represents.
The varied pieces of Clin d'Oeil, created using high-quality materials and fine tuned craftsmanship techniques, are a perfect blend of history, memory and vision, showcasing thus the truly Italian style and aesthetic.
The Clin d'Oeil collection was showcased in the Corso Monforte showroom during Fuorisalone 2022.
