German-based company Budde’s new table luminaire SFIR offers users the chance to actively interact with the lighting product. Unlike the generic role of switching the light on or off, users can play with the plate of the luminaire to control the intensity and direction of the light emitted. Characteristic of Budde’s usage of a combination of rectilinear and curved lines, SFIR’s design comprises linear and curved geometries to produce a visually balanced piece.

The German-based furniture company, helmed by Johannes Budde, is driven by the motto of designing seamless and versatile furniture that satisfies contemporary sensibilities. The studio produces the full range of traditionally used furniture, but in its own distinct style. Dominated by curved lines and clean geometries, their products use just the right number of twists and turns, never overdoing or undoing their designs.

The SFIR table luminaire is a three-part product that can easily be assembled for usage and dismantled for storage, without the usage of any extra tools. The shiny glass sphere between the aluminium cylinder holder and the aluminium plate acts like a joint, allowing the plate to latch onto it at a single given point, and rotating with it over the cylindrical luminaire. This seamless movement of the plate and the sphere in tandem with each other offers the user a chance to play with it and control its function in an interesting manner.

The bollard-like appearance of the luminaire does not mean that it lacks the functional elements that make up a lamp. The plate acts like the lampshade, controlling the amount of light emitted from the lamp, the cylindrical aluminium base imitates the role of the lamp support, while also fulfilling the job of the light bulb in a lamp.

It is, however, the glass sphere that grants this product the status of a sculptural piece. It makes the overall piece appear lighter and more sophisticated, balancing the appearance of the product, both with its material and with its shape.
