Enter Art Fair 2024 is just around the corner, and will be held from August 29 - September 1, 2024, in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is Scandinavia’s largest international art fair and since its inauguration in 2019, has focused on digital art practices and new methods of collecting art.

The organising team anticipates that the fair’s sixth edition will feature works by over 350 international artists, spread across 96 galleries from 20 nations, drawing 20,000 international visitors. Enter Art Fair 2024’s Art Program will be curated for the first time by curator and digital artist Diana Velasco, who is the founder and artistic director of the Museum of Nordic Digital Art (MoNDA) and Radar Contemporary. In the run-up to the event, Julie Leopold Alf, founder and CEO, Enter Art Fair, joins STIR for an interview that illuminates how the fair’s 2024 edition positions Scandinavian art to the larger European context, as well as the impact that deep tech-powered artmaking—which Enter Art Fair 2024 explores in depth—will have on traditional artistic mediums.

The sixth edition of Enter Art Fair sports some big names on its artist roster, such as Japanese painter Miwa Ogasawara, who creates deeply moving paintings of the sky, Danish mixed media illustrator Peter Larsen, who is famed for his colourful compositions and Danish and Norwegian artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, who explore the intersection of art, design and architecture.

There are also some relatively younger practices coming to Copenhagen for the art event, such as contemporary artist Emily Kraus, who creates massive pattern-rich works reminiscent of computer glitches, using various artmaking tools along with a programmable printing press.

There is a conspicuously large representation of Danish artists and practices at Enter Art Fair 2024, with over 100 artists or groups from the Scandinavian nation. Beyond Denmark, practices from wider Scandinavia are also abundant at the fair. Leopold tells STIR that the organising team behind the art fair sees it as a gateway to the Scandinavian market and says, “Enter Art Fair's 2024 edition will showcase the vibrancy and dynamism of Scandinavian art within a larger European and international context, fostering dialogue, collaboration and mutual understanding among artists, collectors and audiences from across the continent. [It] will showcase the interconnectedness of Scandinavian art with broader European and international artistic movements.”

The gallery list at Enter Art Fair 2024 also displays a strong Danish representation, with just over 20 galleries being based in Denmark. These include established galleries such as Galleri Nicolai Wallner, which has operated for 30 years and focused on the presentation of contemporary art, as well as newer ones like the one-year-old Tech Contemporary, which centres digital art and sells NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). 22 of the participating art galleries will be exhibiting at the fair for the first time. Enter Art Fair 2024 will also include an expanded Young Gallery Section, which features 19 galleries from 12 nations.

The fair will feature a Sculpture Park with over 10 large scale art pieces. There will also be a new Digital Section, which features galleries and practices that activate cutting-edge digital technology through augmented reality (AR) and NFT technology. Tech Contemporary will also be part of this section.

Enter Art Fair 2024 will enthral audiences with performances by interdisciplinary artist duo Operator (Ania Catherine & Dejha Ti) and French experiential artist Natacha Paquignon among others. The art festival also deepens its focus on digital art practices with a Talk Program that will examine current digital trends and institutional initiatives in the digital space, with speakers including Madeleine Pierpont, Web3 Associate, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York in the United States.

Leopold is optimistic about the impact that future-forward digital arts practices could have on the art canon and the art market but does not believe that traditional artmaking will be compromised or devalued. In her words, “Traditional artistic mediums will continue to exist and be appreciated, but a new genre has emerged which has created a new visual language and art market… We are excited to be a platform of discovery for innovative tech and art, and through our Art and Talk Program facilitate dialogues about its challenges and opportunities.”

With so much and more to see and learn about, Enter Art Fair 2024 promises to be both, a veritable smorgasbord of compelling practices for those familiar with digital artmaking, as well as an extensive primer for new audiences.

Enter Art Fair 2024 will run from August 29 - September 1, 2024, at Lokomotivværkstedet, Otto Busses Vej 5A, 2450 Copenhagen, Denmark.
