The iconoclastic Italian designer and architect Gaetano Pesce (1939-2024) is fondly remembered and revered for pushing boundaries and manifesting whimsical and experimental forms. A leading figure of the Radical Design movement in the 1960s, Pesce pioneered the fusion of art and design. Ranging from diminutive decorative objects to imposing architectural spaces, his creations display deep contemplation of modern design.
In Nilufar Gallery and the work of its founder Nina Yashar, the visionary creator found a kindred spirit. Their collaboration dates back to 2001 when Pesce proposed an innovative design involving the first-ever use of silicone to create a unique set of rug designs. “I met Gaetano Pesce by chance when he dropped by the gallery in Via della Spiga. We immediately hit it off and over dinner he proposed to me the first exclusive project for the gallery: a unique edition of silicone rugs,” shares Yashar.
The creative collaboration between Pesce and Yashar resulted in a remarkable collection of multicoloured Travel Vases developed exclusively for the art gallery that showcases the designer’s singular viewpoint. Made from a silicone shell with legs in a polyurethane resin, each vase in the limited edition series of 200 is one of a kind. In all his work, he expresses his guiding principle: "that modernism is less a style than a method for interpreting the present and hinting at the future in which individuality is preserved and celebrated," as the gallery shares. His works are currently on display at Nilufar Gallery.
