At its Les Moulins venue in the Ile-de-France countryside, Galleria Continua is presenting Kaleidoscopes - Cuba: contemporary perspectives (Kaléidoscopes - Cuba: regards contemporains), a major group exhibition bringing together 25 Cuban contemporary artists, their works, produced between the 1970s and the present day, inviting an exploration of "the beauty, complexity and diversity of Cuban culture through the prism of contemporary art," according to the art gallery. The show is curated by Laura Salas Redondo and Niurma Pérez Zerpas, taking over 7,000 square metres of the Moulin de Boissy from June 23 - October 20, 2024.

"We are delighted to seize this unique opportunity to bring together at the Moulin de Boissy, a unique venue in terms of atmosphere and volume, this teeming panorama composed of 25 of the most emblematic artists of the dynamism and creative inventiveness of the Cuban scene. This exhibition can be discovered at the crossroads of their gazes, in the joy, poetry and depth of their perspectives and reflection," the curators share, commenting on the show being a testament to Continua's long-standing commitment to 'promoting and disseminating these works around the world'.

Probing the concept of fragmentation and multiple perspectives, the exhibition's title evokes the image of a kaleidoscope, "a singular object shaping elusive forms from coloured fragments, becoming a metaphor for the experience to come," according to the gallery's press statement. In the show, contemporary Cuban art unfolds through this unique, singular prism, with each artist serving as a vital piece of a perpetually evolving mosaic.

Reinforcing its multi-faceted nature, the structure of Kaleidoscopes - Cuba: contemporary perspectives draws inspiration from Julio Cortázar's novel Hopscotch (1963), an emblematic literary work that challenges traditional narrative conventions, inviting each reader to actively participate in shaping the story through various paths and reading possibilities.

Reflecting these contemporary perspectives, the ongoing art exhibition showcases major works by Italian multimedia artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, conceived during his numerous actions and interventions in Cuba that highlight his deep connection to the island. The quest for utopia—a central theme in the resurgence of Cuban artistic tradition—also aligns with Pistoletto's artistic concerns. This attachment is evident in several Quadri Specchianti (Mirror Paintings) produced in Cuba, as well as in Spazio Libero, featured in the exhibition.

By crafting an artistic mosaic, as Cortázar calls his novel, Kaleidoscopes - Cuba: contemporary perspectives immerses visitors in a captivating artistic universe created by a diverse group of artists. Set in the unique space of the Moulin de Boissy—an area with an industrial past that harmoniously interacts with the surrounding nature, especially the Grand Morin River—the exhibition invites exploration and reflection vis à vis multimedia art.

"Kaleidoscopes - Cuba: contemporary perspectives reminds us that art has the power to transcend borders and break down barriers, bringing people together through creative expression," observes Galleria Continua.

Other participating artists include Juan Carlos Alom, Waldo Balart, Alejandro Campins, Iván Capote, Yoan Capote, Laura Carralero, Yaima Carrazana, Elizabet Cerviño, Ariamna Contino & Alex Hernández, Raúl Cordero, Jenny Feal, Joaquín Ferrer, Diana Fonseca, Carlos Garaicoa, Rocío García, Flavio Garciandía, Osvaldo González, Luis López-Chávez, Carlos Martiel, Enrique Martínez Celaya, José Mesías, Yanelis Mora, Michel Pérez Pollo, Susana Pilar and José Yaque.
