The Moon’s Daughter is a Pearl is an exhibition of work by London-based artist Emma Witter for Gallery FUMI. It’s title references a poem by Anna Souter, a writer whose explorations of art and ecology have long intertwined with Witter’s own practice, and conjures an ethereal space where natural remnants, myth, and human craft come together in delicate, tactile harmony.
This new body of work centres on oyster shells harvested from market stall waste - humble cast-offs given renewed life through a delicate subaqueous process. In a bath of copper sulphate, distilled water and electricity, the shells are slowly transformed, embalmed in precious metal - a modern alchemy. Their interiors, hand-painted with pearlescent and metallic pigments and sealed under crystal resin, shimmer like hidden treasures or relics drawn from the ocean’s depths.
