Exhibition Details

Founded in 2001 by Marcelo Vasconcellos and Alberto Vicente, Mercado Moderno (MEMO) is a gallery based in Rio de Janeiro, dedicated to Brazilian Design. Its main specialities are vintage Design from the 1950s to 1980s, collecting incredible original pieces by Joaquim Tenreiro, Sergio Rodrigues, and José Zanine Caldas among others, as well as the freshest Brazilian contemporary design art. Over the last twenty years, by organizing reference books, debates and exhibitions, MEMO conducts an extensive work of recording and documenting historical furniture, and has played a prominent role in the recent process of global appreciation of Brazilian Design.
For this year's edition of NOMAD St. Moritz, Mercado Moderno features an exclusive selection of Brazilian designs showcasing remarkable mid-century modern pieces combined with a selection of captivating contemporary pieces.
The slow design" of Ines Schertel - one of the most solid names of Brazilian contemporary production - brings the typical Brazilian warmth, here translated by the use of wool, showing that creativity in the use of materials has always been a hallmark of Brazilian Design. An essentially organic ambience, with handcrafted works, made to last, in complete harmony with the desires of present collections.
In addition to the designer's wool pieces, works by Brazilian designers Gustavo Bittencourt, DJ Papagaio, Fabio Hendry and Guilherme Sass are also on display."
