Contemporary Istanbul is preparing to welcome visitors to its 17th edition, which will be held at Tersane Istanbul on September 17-22, 2022, with Akbank as the main partner.
The oldest art fair in the region, Contemporary Istanbul is a major platform connecting artists, galleries, and collectors from around the world. For its 2022 edition, the fair will bring together 60 contemporary art galleries from 25 countries, which will showcase 1,500 artworks by 600 artists. Among them are some of the most influential galleries from Istanbul, including Dirimart, Nev Istanbul, Sanatorium, The Pill, Zilberman, Galerist, Pilot as well as leading galleries from around the world, such as Leila Heller (New York, Dubai), Opera Gallery (Hong Kong, Dubai, Paris, New York, Miami), JD Malat ( London), Berman Contemporary (Johannesburg), Bavan Gallery (Tehran), and Anca Poterasu (Bucharest). Among the galleries participating in Contemporary Istanbul for the first time are 193 Gallery (Paris), Hestia (Belgrade), Wadström Tönnheim (Marbella), Dédicace (Tbilisi), Instituto de Visión (Bogota, New York), Mucciaccia Contemporary (Rome).
Tersane Istanbul, the venue of the 17th Contemporary Istanbul, is a spectacular architectural landmark and a historical gem located on the Golden Horn. Used by the Ottomans as imperial shipyards, the site dates back to the 15th century. The historical buildings of Tersane have been recently renovated by the award-winning firm Tabanlıoğlu Architects. The Yard exhibition, which will be held at the outer courtyard of Tersane as part of Contemporary Istanbul, will feature 25 site-specific installations and sculptures by artists such as Ayşe Erkmen, Canan Tolon, Halil Altındere, Isaac Chong Wai, Sergen Şehitoğlu, Yagız Özgen, Renée Levi, Laurent Bolognini.
The Initiative Program will introduce a number of contemporary art initiatives rising in different regions of Turkey. Hosted by Contemporary Istanbul Foundation and fair partners, the program will showcase various projects from Ankara, Antalya, Balikesir, Diyarbakir, Istanbul, and Izmir.
This summer Contemporary Istanbul Foundation (CIF) is running an artist-in-residence program. The residency focuses on the topic of upcycling and the artists are working with scrap metal materials. The works produced by the artists will be exhibited at a special exhibition at Contemporary Istanbul and will continue to be exhibited in different venues both abroad and in Turkey.
