For the latest edition of PAD Paris, a design fair curated to commemorate and display the works of international design collectors, the Belgian design gallery, Maniera, has won the PAD prize for the best contemporary design object. The winning display is a traditional dining chair designed by Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai.

Indian architect Bijoy Jain, established Studio Mumbai in 2005 with the vision of curating contemporary designs powered by traditional values. His practice in the field involves the traditional craftsmanship of skilled Indian artisans. The idea is to fabricate unique pieces that blend tradition with contemporary designs. The architect has been actively contributing to the world of architecture, interior and product design with his immensely thoughtful and uncompromising details. Though most of his projects are based in India, Bijoy gained international recognition through his installation ‘Work Place’ at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale along with his ‘In between architecture’ installation at the Victoria and Albert museum.

The prize-winning Muga silk dining chair is the perfect display of minimalism and traditional intricacies. Structured in teak wood, the chair is crafted with an artisanal weave using Muga silk– a type of wild silk native to Assam, India. The uniqueness of the chair lies in the lustre that the silk shows in contrast to the subtle neutral wood. The designer chair speaks volumes about Jain’s style of creating subtle aesthetics through bespoke pieces which are firm, unique and evidently sophisticated.

PAD recognises the importance of aesthetics in today’s time and provides the fine display of designs in a beautiful setting that is continually renewing itself. Each edition of the fair is an evolution that draws the attention of the visitors to the conversation between art and décor. The event gives away the prizes for the best Design stand, contemporary design piece and historical design piece every year. The jury is inclusive of many known designers across the globe, including Jacques Grange, Joseph Dirand, Hugo Sauzay, Mathilde Favier among others.
