Carrying forward their long-established synergetic and creative relationship with the Shanghai-based design brand Stellar Works, Danish design studio Space Copenhagen and multidisciplinary design firm OEO Studio bring to light their distinct new collections, actualised for the eminent furniture design brand. Exuding clean and modern beauty, Space Copenhagen crafts two functional and versatile collections, the Atelier sofa and Journey chair, both derivatives of the studio’s approach to design they define as “poetic modernism.” Meanwhile, following the first collaboration of Stellar Works and OEO Studio ten years back, the recent Aya collection of dining chairs and tables exhibits a shared propensity for an aesthetic that embodies elegance and minimalism.
Atelier, a work emanating simplicity and sophistication, narrates Space Copenhagen’s desire to create a sofa that assumes the form of a serene retreat for relaxation and contemplation. A summation of five components – a pouffe, divan and corner sections – the modular design can be configured to meet personalised requisites and accent various settings, both domestic or commercial.
The Atelier sofa encompasses two aesthetic propositions for the base. The ‘skirt’ version veils the legs and extends the soft tactility of the upholstery to the floor, while the ‘leg’ version exposes the wooden legs, making the base levitate. “We wanted to pursue a dream to create a very minimal, understated design, which is all about upholstery and refined sartorial detailing,” say Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou, founders of Space Copenhagen. “It is basically the sofa we have wanted to use in our own projects and homes for years, calm, soft, meditative, mostly about tactility, rather than focused on decorative statements,” they add.
A contemporary reinterpretation of the classic Safari chair design, Journey’s adaptable composition strikes a balance between the rustic and a more modern and tasteful approach to design. Beyond justifying its role as a dining chair, it complements the home and workspaces with equal ease. A domineering masculine silhouette conspires with subtle arches and a soft tactility to concoct a buoyant and sophisticated look that epitomises comfort. “We have always been deeply fascinated by the Safari chair. A typology derived from the notion of travel and adventure, and which has translated into multiple variations over time and place,” comment Henriksen and Rützou about their inspiration for Journey. “The historic Safari Chair has an almost naïve, sturdy, simple geometric structure - with added hard and soft components to secure softness and flexibility,” they share.
The Aya collection, with its poetic name reverberating with its designs, is a minimal yet intricate collection where every detail, from the small wooden joints and angles used to the stitching on the seating, has been meticulously synthesised. The Aya collection represents an amalgamation of the Japanese and Scandinavian cultures, their history of aesthetics and their intrinsic differences that the OEO Studio interweaves together to create the fabric of functional and appealing designs. Oozing character, the Aya dining chair is an upholstered chair with a slender wooden frame outline, while the corresponding Aya dining table mirrors a similar commitment to refinement, comfort and durability. “ It is extremely rewarding to see the collection and design unfold,” says Thomas Lykke, Head of Design and Founding Partner of OEO Studio. “Stellar Works is the perfect partner for Aya, and we share the same understanding and notion of detail, comfort and quality,” he adds.
The contemporary and compelling novelties by Space Copenhagen fuelled by an intuitive approach to find an equilibrium between opposites –industrial and organic, sculptural and minimal – and by OEO Studio infusing Asian culture into its Scandinavian design heritage add to Stellar Works’ repertoire of exquisite furniture design and traditional craftsmanship. The Atelier sofa, Journey chair and the Aya collection besides catering to functional and aesthetic needs of users, exemplify adaptability, quality and longevity.
