Leading Asian furniture brand Stellar Works have recently partnered with renowned Italian architect and designer, Michele De Lucchi giving way to their second collaboration, Stay. The collection by the celebrated designer features a dining table and a chair, their organic and agile forms communicating the utmost sensitivity towards sustainability that resides at the core of the craftsmanship. “At this time, when we are aware of the climate emergency and the need to change our behaviour, wood is sustainable and makes everything seem natural,” shares Michele De Lucchi. I thought it would be fantastic to create a collection carved in wood for Stellar Works, which expresses today's sensitivity for the planet with a strong emotional identity,” he adds.
The distinctive trait that sets the furniture designs apart is its simplicity. By renouncing the superfluous, the Italian designer honours nature and lets the raw materiality of wood take the spotlight. The Stay dining table, embodies this approach. It is composed of four pieces of wood merging flawlessly in the centre with a refined bevelled edge design. The legs of the table, branching into two, provide a firm foothold to the ensemble while being an artistic reflection of a tree. “Wood never makes waste,” says De Lucchi. “I love carving wood because it is a material that lends itself well to our ability to create ever-changing objects with our hands, which is what sets us apart as human beings,” he shares.
The Stay chair, also carved in wood, showcases a similar strength in character and with its seat inspired from the shape of a four-leaf clover, contains prominent references to nature. Akin to its counterpart, it features organic branching legs giving stability and solidity to the form. During the production phase the direction of the wood grain was controlled to enhance the aesthetics of the chair and accentuate the natural material used. Each individual component of the table and the chair are finished by hand, rendering each piece unique. The urge to swerve from the conventional path of industrial production was fuelled by a persevering commitment to the craft.
Michele De Lucchi with his experience in architecture, design, technology and crafts along with Stellar Works has introduced an approach that is sensitive and respectful to the planet, strips down the design to its bare minimum by eliminating the redundant, while unequivocally delivering quality.
