The Frame Sculpture by Kristina Dam Studio marks an important event in the design firm’s journey. Heralded as the 10th anniversary piece by the design studio, it also serves as a tangible marker for the studio’s planned focus on sculptural minimalism 2022 onwards. “The sculpture is minimalist and easily decodable in its design and choice of material (powder-coated steel). It is a solid architectural and graphic object like the Kristina Dam Studio monochrome illustrations,” says Kristina Dam, designer of the sculpture and founder of the studio, explaining how the sculpture epitomises the studio’s characteristic minimal aesthetic.
The eponymous design studio was founded in 2012 by architect Kristina Dam with the intention of creating industrial designs with an art-based approach. While the studio initially focused on producing limited-edition illustrations, it later evolved into a multidisciplinary firm that is involved in furniture and accessory design, interior design as well as sculpture design.
The subtle geometries of the Frame Sculpture makes it suitable to occupy contemporary spaces without completely overpowering the setting. On the other hand, its distinct shape makes it unmissable. Made out of at least three different planes intersecting each other at obtuse angles, the sculpture appears different when viewed from different angles. “The sculpture originates from many of the shapes already seen in the collection - curves and sharp geometric straight lines,” shares Dam about the Frame Sculpture.
The Frame Sculpture is the largest sculpture that the studio has designed till date. While the sculpture is created as a decorative object, it also doubles as a side table, thus catapulting it under the functional category. Multifunctionality is a common thread that binds almost all the designs created by the studio. "I am proud and happy for this sculpture which can stand both inside and outdoors. It truly creates a character for the space you place it in," shares Dam, bringing to attention another striking feature that defines the sculpture. Dam has also designed a limited edition abstract poster that serves as the 2D version of the sculpture piece.
The studio regularly updates their extensive portfolio with new sculptures that are added to each collection which are then released. The Frame Sculpture is part of their Spring/Summer 2022 or SS22 collection is set to be unveiled soon. “Arches and architecture have been the essence of the Kristina Dam Studio's monochrome collections for the past 10 years. In 2022, we mark our focus on sculptural minimalism with our new clean, honest, and contemporary designs and acclaim our passion for craftsmanship and material,” said Dam on being asked about the inspiration behind her upcoming collection.
The SS22 collection is set to introduce the studio’s new bathroom series as well as Japanese Tray Tables and Edo Side Table. Both the Japanese Tray Table and the Edo Side Table are multifunctional pieces of furniture that also carry illustrations created by Dam. When asked about the new bathroom line that is set to be introduced, Dam explains, “The bathroom series adds tactility from small apricot grains in the soap and texture in towels with graphic patterns and offers minimalist mirrors with dowel detail and beautiful material combinations.”
While the entire SS22 collection has been created by Kristina Dam to herald the studio’s design philosophy, Dam’s favourite piece from the collection is the Frame Sculpture. “I love our sculptures, and they are and always will be my darlings,” she concludes.
