Art Fair Tokyo renders art as a medium to connect the past and present

Notable works such as Picasso, Van Gogh, Ko-Kutani, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Noritaka Tatehana will be on display during the show from March 10 to 12, 2023.

Art Fair Tokyo 2023 will unravel bespoke artworks by Asian artists from March 10 to 12, 2023, known to be Asia's first major contemporary art exposition at the largest art fair in Japan. Inviting art professionals, commercial art galleries and art dealers from across Japan and the world, the art fair manifests as a haven for artists, curators and collectors to collaborate, network and exchange ideas, brewing conversations and dialogues. In this year’s art event, several overseas galleries will be showcasing their pioneering artists, whose works attract professionals, and students alike.

Exclusively showcasing artworks from both China and Japan, juxtaposing art by great masters alongside works by contemporary artists. The event has three core exhibitions, with galleries at the forefront shining light on modern and historical artworks. A designated section touted 'Crossing' is dedicated to showcasing Japanese culture through a traditional and modern lens. Adding to the Japanese culture will be 'Projects' exhibiting solo shows by Japanese artists for the viewers to immerse in a world of art manifested in a five square metre booth.

STIR enlists some of the local and international galleries that will grace the fairgrounds of Art Fair Tokyo 2023.

Pearl Lam Galleries

Standing as an interlink between East and West to establish a cross-cultural exchange, China-based Pearl Lam Galleries, founded in 2005, conquers the world of contemporary art. Showcasing works by Chinese and international artists, the gallery aims at stirring a dialogue that challenges perceptions of cultural practices in the region. At the Tokyo Art Fair, the gallery will showcase a sculptural design by A.A. Murakami touted Cell 3, crafted in foamed aluminium with a stainless steel plinth.

TARO NASU

Japan-based gallery TARO NASU views contemporary art as an intriguing experience representing Japanese and international artists that resonate with and radiate the gallery's vision. At the art festival, TARO NASU has lined up artists like Futo Akiyoshi, Taiji Matsue, Takashi Homma and Lawrence Weiner along with Negative Entropy by Mika Tajima, Everything is broken down by Ryan Gander, Art d’Ameublement by Mika Tajima.

Taguchi Fine Art

Taguchi Fine Art gallery founded in 2001, in Japan channels the issues of human existence through art as a medium. With a holistic approach to the artists they represent the gallery will showcase renowned artists like Frank Gerritz, Yasutake Iwana, Michael Toenges, Regine Schumann. Squared Cone Form, Big Double Dome and Big Dome by Christiane Löhr.

Misa Shin Gallery

Located in central Tokyo, Misa Shin Gallery represents both local and international artists with a conceptual approach to their art, providing young artists with a medium to showcase their creations worldwide. True to Japanese roots, the gallery promotes Japanese conceptualism, highlighting the art history of post-war Japan. Establishing cohesion between art, architecture, theatre, and music, the gallery is prepped to showcase Vegetable Weapon by Ozawa Tsuyoshi and creations by Iba Yasuko, Shingo Francis, Iha Linda, and Maeda Saki

SHINYA Japanese Art & Design

Specialising in Japanese art and paintings from Meji, Taisho and Showa periods, SHINYA Japanese Art and Design gallery showcases art that responds to accidental influences redefining the idea of modernity. At the art fair the gallery will exhibit 12 pieces crafted with iron created by artist Yuichi Otake with a keen eye on sharp lines and a corroded rust look.

Art expands its horizon at the fair with a range of expressions across genres, inculcating a dialogue between the artist and viewer connecting them to a world of historic and contemporary art. Developing a meaningful connection between the past and the present, Art Fair Tokyo constructs a bridge between Asia and the West through art.

Art Fair Tokyo 2023 will take place at Tokyo International Forum Hall E / Lobby Gallery in Tokyo, Japan from 10 to 12 March, 2023.
