10 dining table accessories accentuating the communal aura of dining spaces

STIR enlists 10 dining table accessories that infuse contemporary aesthetics, craftsmanship, dynamism, and playfulness into dining spaces.

The history of dining halls can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome. While the Greeks would gather on wood and stone couches for meals, the Romans retreated to a separate room called the triclinium. A room that was associated with the wealthy as a place of secluded eating, evolved, over centuries, into a space where family members could discretely enjoy each other's company over food, fostering the sharing of ideas, dialogue, and talk. Dining table accessories, then, weave together varied elements, creating a themed environment that draws attention onto the dining table. From plates to cutlery sets, cups to trays, napkin holders to coasters, candle holders to oil burners and centrepieces to flower vases, all elements add to the interplay of playfulness, contemporaneity, and craftsmanship that define the dining space.

STIR enlists 10 such modern dining table accessories, which act as points of attraction at the dining table, adding to the dynamism of the space.

Still Life by CGN. Design

Designed by Mexican designer Edgar Orlaineta, who has extensive experience in wood and has developed the lathe technique for essential forms, in which he produces archetypal forms that are utilitarian, the series focuses on aspects of composing and decomposing. The size and shape of the forms resemble bowls, pots or bases, with the ceramic design series employing transversal cuts to evoke a face, a facet, or a faction. All the products of the series, by the design gallery CGN, were composed of the same shapes, differing in the sense of transversal cut made onto them. This series dictates how a single cut can create variations in shapes and positions.

Sophia Centrepiece- Large by LATOXLATO

Piazza, Italy's most distinctive architectural element, has been manifested into a dining table accessory, the Sophia Centrepiece, by Italian designers, Francesco Breganze de Capnist and Virginia Valentini. Similar to a piazza which gathers people of the town, the centrepiece acts as a place of interaction between everyday objects. The piece, by Italian furniture brand LATOXLATO, not only exhibits the detailed architectural elements but also emphasises a minimal style with subtle lines, enhanced with flashes of gold and silver. Narrating the amalgamation of aesthetics, practicality, and originality, the centrepiece interprets architectural language into a household object.

Aureola by Luca Nichetto

Depicting a totem, the Aureola tea set produces a distinctive form by piling all its elements one above the other. The product was designed in collaboration with Russian designer Lera Moiseeva, drawing inspiration from Russian round bowls, traditionally used in Russian tea and beverage drinking ceremonial functions. The product set, by Luca Nichetto, comprises a teapot, a filter, and two cups made from fine porcelain.

New Horizons collection by Nada Debs

Transcending the essence of nature, Lebanese designer Nada Debs plays with stamped leather in her collection New Horizons. Using the technique of leather marquetry and hand-drawn curves, with a colour palette representing the elements of earth, water and fire, the set imbibes nature into household products. The collection houses vide poche, coasters, and leather carafe holders.

Roma Objects by Turri

Made entirely from Verde Alpi or Calacatta marble, Roma objects depict an expression of simplicity and elegance. The marble designs with their tactile curves and round and oval shapes reflect the authenticity of the Turri brand. Through soft and rounded lines, the collection proves its richness and uniqueness in material.

Salvadané by Domenico Orefice

Salvadané, the piggy bank, was designed in the historic Curti Furnace of Milan, where the classic spherical piggy bank archetype originated. The defining characteristics of the piggy bank, designed by Domenico Orefice, are the linear holes revolving around the top part, facilitating the breaking of the top from the remaining part. The holes allow coins to enter the piggy bank, which has the added functionality of being used as a flower pot or container.

Out of Scale by Mario Trimarchi

Out of Scale by Mario Trimarchi is the result of long research, and blurring the lines of nature, architecture, sculpture, and design. The micro-architecture collection serves as fruit holders or centrepieces and is crafted from architectural materials such as concrete, wood, aluminium and bronze, which is milled, stamped or cast. Imbibing both edgy lines and smooth curves, the collections narrate an evolved design language of geometrical forms.

Artichoke Candleholder by Nilufar Gallery

Nina Yashar of Nilufar Gallery believes in valuing design to tell stories and Artichoke, a part of the gallery's curation is a reflection of that sentiment. Made from ceramic which is intricately hand carved and hand painted by a craftsperson, and crafted by designer Lola Montes, the candle depicts a flower holding a candle, in sculptural form.

Louis by StudioFER

A ceramic oil burner, Louis by StudioFER communicates with the environment and attracts one by conferring a traditional ritual in architectural form. The oil burner presents an interplay of sculptural disposition in its material and form -- drawing strong architectural references. The oil burner is available in two colours.

The Spawns by oio and Giosampietro

This ensemble of silverware is a collaboration between London-based studio oio and designer Giosampietro, illustrating the hybrid future that is taking shape all around us. The designers unveiled the product design, made from scratch using artificial intelligence. "The Artisanal Intelligence process is a way to try and bridge together the distant worlds of artificial intelligence and craftsmanship, of digital pixel and melted atoms, of ‘magic' automation and handmade stuff," shares Simone Rebaudengo, oio futures director and co-founder.
