LATOxLATO at Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile.Milano 2023, influences the creative journey of Encore and Tonin Casa with its metaphysical and architectural style. The design workshop founded by two architects Francesco Breganze de Capnist and Virginia Valentini, in addition to overseeing art direction for Encore, collaborates with both brands and develops projects ranging from furniture to accessories. The same versatility is an integral part of LATOxLATO’s way of designing, which in its production moves smoothly in the different home and contract environments, tackling all scales of the interior world, from tables to vases, from beds to storage furniture.

The common thread is always a marked reference to architectural volumes and geometries, with a particular focus on Italian art and architecture history, which the design workshop often pays homage to with its collections. “In all our projects we try to enclose an architectural element, whether it is a well-defined geometry or a repeatability that, along with the shadows, punctuates the form,” explain de Capnist and Valentini.

The vision leads the duo to experiment with various materials such as ceramics, wood, stone, and metals, with a refined use of colours. The colour palette favours powder tones, white and black, which enhance the rarefied and metaphysical design.

The project is always conceived as the presence of a distinctive character, one that connotes the space. “Each object must be unique, it must have distinctive features. When designing it, we already think of it inserted in an environment and not in a neutral context. Similarly, in our architectural projects, each environment must have a large and central impact element around which the house develops. It is that element that you see immediately upon entering, and it makes you stop and look at the architecture around you,” say de Capnist and Valentini. In the duo’s vision, each space must have its own uniqueness: “In homes typically, the living room is usually the most viewed and representative environment, but in our opinion, the rest of the house, up to the most hidden environment, must also live up to it. Each interior must have its own characteristics and personality,” conclude the two designers, who will also present a preview of the wallpaper collection, created for Inkiostro Bianco at jrk design’s Brentano Hub space during Milan Design Week.
