Mercado Moderno
Brazil
One of the main design galleries in Brazil, Mercado Moderno has played a prominent role in the recent global appreciation of modern Brazilian furniture. Its foundation, in 2001, coincided with the moment when, after two decades of ostracism, a historical review in Brazil of this rich production from the period between the 1940s and 1970s began.
A large part of its collection was acquired at auctions from old companies, in which few pieces were specified and there were no parameters of value. The project involved a hard work of investigation, in contact with designers, heirs and specialists, countered by the wonder of discovering small treasures every day. This was – and still is – the routine of the founding partners, Alberto Vicente and Marcelo Vasconcellos, in a path that consolidated them as reference specialists in the national and international market.
Besides that, it unfolded in several actions to register, expand and disseminate the acquired knowledge, such as the organization and support of some of the fundamental works of literature on the subject and the curatorship of exhibitions in reference institutions around Brazil.
Along this trajectory, the gallery has also approached the main names in contemporary Brazilian Design production, and today it represents some of the most creative and consistent initiatives in this segment.
From Equinoctial gallery - its American branch, in NY - Mercado Moderno expands its global presence and is able to directly market its catalog worldwide.
However, from its mansion in Lapa, in Rio de Janeiro, the gallery continues to receive passionate clients, architects, interior designers and collectors who can appreciate a unique set of furniture, unique pieces and rare objects, mined by the owners.
