Objective is pleased to present Brecht Wright Gander's first solo exhibition in China - Don't Talk To Strangers from April 30 to July 25, 2021, at the gallery's brand new space - the former Brunner Mond Matheson near the Bund. The exhibition will showcase Objective's represented artist Brecht Wright Gander's latest series of works, The Luminous Body. With his metaphorical and playful designs, Gander challenges and inverts the ordinary understanding of how human beings and furniture co-exist and interact with each other. Consider the vital pulse of things, the undercurrents of memory and association they channel, the way an old shoe, an empty page waiting on the test, a single bed, can swell with longing and loss, and densify with the psychic dark matter that lends mass to a life. There is an outrageous intimacy to furniture, to extend ourselves we make furniture a part of us.
A lamp with a Victorian shade and an array of thrusting wooden appendages. A chair that crawls away. A bed that is too busy having its own dream to support a dreamer - The Luminous Body includes artworks that brim and stretch alongside automata with repetitive and relentless actions, they gleam like polished lacquer and stretch like loose skin. Gander has tried to make The Luminous Body a collection of agents rather than subjects - to activate them with electricity and flexibility so that their forms are not in bondage to our functions - many of his latest pieces put up active resistance to being pressed into service.
